Subject: How do you listen to music?

Written By: bchris02 on 09/01/17 at 3:06 pm

While I can now store my entire music library on my phone, I still like to listen to the radio because it helps me discover new artists and songs.  However, terrestrial FM radio in my rural area is so bad it just doesn't cut it.  I've thought about getting satellite being that I had it in my old car and loved it, but it wouldn't integrate very well in my current car and would be a pain.  What platform do you rely on for discovering new music?

I do try to have music on all the time, pop, easy listening or classical, usually now from radio stations via the Internet.

I used to listen on a clock radio, but the reception is always not that good.

Most of my music I've bought, either through iTunes or CD's ordered off Amazon.

Well I still listen to music through an old-fashioned thing called a CD player. :P I prefer to actually own my music in physical form, rather than just streaming. I hardly ever use Spotify and I haven't used iTunes in several years.

Apart from that, I also regularly listen to the radio (a rock station) and listen to some songs on YouTube.

I discover music through YouTube and find ways to get the music offline onto my phone and computer if I like it. I usually only stick to streaming if it's popular enough to not be taken down on YouTube, Spotify, Google Play Music, Amazon Music etc., or if I don't particularly care about it being taken down.

Best method. I'd pirate music otherwise, but this is if I don't really care about who made the music or if I had no other way of getting it. I only stream on occasion, because I don't want it to replace physical mediums or digital downloads that are accessible through any app, not just Spotify (you can download music to listen to offline with premium, but only through the app, and even then, songs can get taken down even if you download it - they probably say you're not authorised to have the song downloaded on there any more or something).

I have a playlist on my phone, which I enjoy listening to with earbuds. Sometimes I listen to vinyl records on my record player..oh yeah, VERY VINTAGE! It's fun. And once in a while I will listen to some radio stations. I buy my music on itunes still ;D

I usually listen to CDs-while I do the dishes. I'm sure people would laugh watching me do the dishes because I am usually dancing and singing at the same time. lol. Sometimes I will even pop in a cassette tape-if anyone remembers those. lol.

I do listen on the computer from time to time but rarely.

I've found perhaps the best service for music ever! Pay a subscription fee to download music you can keep for half the price of what you pay on iTunes, and be sure it'll stay on your phone or computer, unlike what those goons over at Spotify and Netflix offer! Now, if only it offered more of the music I wanted...

I did 'Other' because I'm all over the map.  I'll preface this to say I LOVE music.    :D

I do use satellite radio - however I seldom look for new music on it, I mostly seek out retro stuff.

I have an old fashioned but much beloved stereo system with speakers - it sits next to the main TV.  It has among other things a turntable.

I still use purchased CDs - in most cases I digitize them right away.

Much of my collection is digitized onto my computer which I do three main things with:

1) I have a much beloved mp3 player (actually two) that I plug into a small receiver in the kitchen, large stereo system, or bedroom stereo.

2) I have a high capacity thumb drive I stick in my car for music.

3) I sometimes burn CDs - used most often for the car

I maintain a large collection of vinyl and still play it at times, but my #1 tendency these days is to digitize it.

I still have a number of cassettes (mostly home-rolled).  They are pulled out on occasion but not that much.

I listen to FM radio for music but less than I used to.  I'm still happy to have FM radio available.

I sometimes play music on my tablet and bluetooth it to either the kitchen receiver or a small bluetooth speaker.  I'll either use a few of my digitized tunes or else do Soundcloud or YouTube, or after I added a satellite upgrade, Sirius.

That about sums it up    ;D

I'd rather use my phone storage for pictures, but satellite radio is great for discovering new music! I miss having a free three month trial of it when my car was new. I suppose I could subscribe. Local stations? Not so much. The rock station here prefers the familiar hits from the past two decades instead of what's new these days and I really hate that.

I have a few CDs myself but haven't played one in a while. I play 'em on the CD player, however.

Local stations only play a certain handful of songs as well over here too. Kind of a bummer.

I've been using it for 12 years.

That's about how long it's been around. I first went there in late 2006 when someone directed me there via a link, and sometime in '07 I started going there regularly to check out various video clips in general.

They also got rid of "My Mix" where all the songs you would listen to they'd put into a small folder of everything you previewed.

What platform do you rely on for discovering new music?

Back when I was more active here, I used this place.

I don't want a platform that's trying to keep me listening/engaged/clicking on ads by serving me music that it's decided I like (or that it knows my "friends" like.)

I want to hear stuff I haven't heard before.  Forums with userbases of people whose interests and demographics are different from me are where I find stuff.

I'm old enough now that I might only like 10% of what I click on, but I'd far rather slog through 9 clicks of "what is this crap?" in order to find that one "this is awesome!" track (which is often followed by "And the entire discography is free on Bandcamp!") -- versus the AI/bigdata approach of "keep the user clicking through 999 clicks of 'meh, not bad' before finding the 1 'recommended' track that results in a sale."
