Subject: When was YOUR core childhood?

Written By: TwilightPrince16 on 01/31/18 at 5:31 pm

Which core childhood range works best for YOU and YOUR OWN CHILDHOOD.

Core childhood are the years that you have distant and vivid memories of being a kid-kid (not a teen/adolescent).

For me, it's 2008-2012 (ages 6-10.)

September 1998 to June 2004, or Grades 1 to 6.

Probably August 2005 to June 2010, which was from the start of Kindergarten to the end of 4th grade.

I could feel different about this date range at other times though.

2005-2008 was my short, core childhood.

When I think of the word "childhood", the years 2006 and 2007 instantly pop up in my mind.

2002-2004 was my early childhood, and 2009-2011 was my late childhood.

I was born in 1990. My earliest memories are from no later than 1993, but the core of my childhood memories range from 1994 through early 1997. I can recall aspects of my 4th, 5th, and 6th birthdays for example with ease. I can't remember my 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th or any other birthday afterward besides my 13th and 16th.

I actually have a list of my memories (A short description of the memory - I suggest everyone does this) and the bulk of my childhood memories stem from between 1994 and 1997, so I would say that that was the core of my childhood. I know for a fact they stem from between 1994 and 1997 due to a variety of objective facts (such as the places the memories occurred in, and also verification by third parties that these events occurred and that they occurred as I remember them).

I would say that while I had some enjoyable experiences afterward, my childhood ended with the death of my pet dog, who was bought when I was 2 and was like my best friend, when which happened sometime between March and May of 1997; The final end of my childhood came in June 1998 when my father was arrested for a DUI (he had been drinking a lot around this time in the summer of 1998 and had become physically abusive with me).

The CORE of my childhood however ended in December 1996 when my parents bought a house in New Jersey; we moved in around the week of Christmas.

The core of your childhood ended in 1996!? Even though the numerical peak of childhood is 8 years old.

Yeah, in terms of feeling that genuine sense of childhood innocence and bliss, yes. Like I said, I still had happy events after 1996, but I mark Dec 96 as the end point because of what followed after in 1997 and 1998. It's just a useful marker because a momentous event happened in Dec 96 in my life. I despised my years living in New Jersey and I don't recall much of it. I can remember feeling in a weird way in 1996 that some big change that wasn't any good was coming soon. I remember having what only be described as a sense of foreboding actually, a bittersweet sense that a certain period of time was coming to an end - I recall feeling this AT THE TIME, not with hindsight. I began acting out in the summer of 1996 whenever something would end - I cried hysterically at the end of a Dance Festival marking the end of Kindergarten in June 1996. I cried hysterically at the culmination of summer camp at the end of August 1996, being sad because I would never see any of them again. I cried when I was pulled out of CCD class for bad behavior sometime in 1996 and saying "I'll never see my friends again!" 1996 was a very big year for me. Our family bird of 15 years died in February 1996. My eldest sister moved out with a man I despised even at that age in April. My mother ran away from home for a week in early June. My father hit me for the first time in around July or August while on vacation. I dealt with having warts on my face from April through around November of that year and going for face surgery sometime during the year. I remember just this sense in the air that a lot was happening, things were changing, and my emotions changed along with it.

What I do recall of being age 8 in 1998 is mainly meeting the man my middle sister had just married sometime in the late summer of 1998, playing Playstation with my brother in law for the first time (I had never seen a Playstation before this), talking to a teenage neighbor about it beforehand, and I recall thinking a Playstation was literally some sort of game TV station, and performing on piano at a concert in December 1998. That's literally the sum and total of my memories from the year 1998 besides my dad being arrested and beating me up on another occasion earlier that summer.

1987-1994 (with 1990-1994 being the peak of kid culture for me).

I can't remember almost anything before around 2006-7, and Around 2011-12 was when I started to lose all friends, my stepdad came in the picture and got married about then, I started to do nothing but gather music and play games 10+ hours a day; all the stuff that characterized my teenage years.

2006-7 till 2011-12 can be broken into two parts, though, since 2008-9 is when lots of my old cartoons were going away and I started to only watch TV in the morning before school and the Internet was becoming a bigger in my life. I started to slowly wean off of my dinosaur craze about 2010 or so too...

So I guess my "core" childhood is from late 2006-late 2008, about from second grade to when I had to transition schools to one with an ABLE program and lost all my friends from that second elementary school.

There's still not a lot about it I remember well enough to put exact dates on anything, but it did seem more "magical" and somewhat more innocent (not by much, but a little) in my head before the fully fleshed out memories and the more XTREME kind of "tweeny?" vibe from 2009-2011

I would say 2009-2014 but I would say around 2010-2014 since I have some nostalgia from it. 2012-2014 is where I have most nostalgia for.

I'm 20 years younger than you!

and for me that would be 2002 - 2006 (aged 6 to 10) also!

we should have a long conversation sometime

we are mirror images of each other in a 20 year cycle

Haha - cool. Were you born in late August? Extra credit if so.

Early February! The complete opposite! I'm 6 months apart from August babies like enemies. Which means I'm my age and 1/2 by August! What makes being born in February (or even January too) fun is that your birthday comes immediately as soon as the year begins and you're closer to those born late in the previous year than those born late in your own year. For example. I'm closer to a September 1995 born than a September 1996 born, and where I grew up there were a lot of September-December 95 born's in my grade.
