Based on these two videos, this is how I'd roughly break down the eras of hip-hop (mainstream at least). Keep in mind this is my own opinion, you may have different opinions on when the eras started/ended specifically:

1979–1986: Early Age
1987–1997: Golden Age
1997–2006: Silver Age
2006–2012: Bronze Age
2012–present: Mumble/Trap Age

Thoughts? Which of these eras is your personal favorite?

My favorite is 2006-2012.  It was still trap back then but most songs had much more synth-heavy and interesting beats.  Today's hip-hop is similar in that it's still dominated by basslines but the synths are gone.

Definitely 1987-1997 for me, 1979-1986 is good too but rap seemed very much like disco around during 79-82 then the electro phase of 82-86.
1986 is when sampling started becoming more prevalent in the production of hip-hop but it was very creative like experiemental musique concrete.

I honestly love hip-hop no matter what era it came from, to be honest. I don't really have a preference for one era over another, but there are specific years that I thought were weak for hip-hop IMO.

In addition to disco, a lot of the early rap is basically "talkin' funk" in style. The later portion of the "early age" though when the breakdancing craze was huge did give that (1983-1985ish) era credibility as the ultimate party rap. Acts like RUN-D.M.C. bridged both eras.  I also see 1987-1991 as quite different from 1992-1997 in the Golden Age with the later having much more gangsta tones, brought by the East Coast/West Coast "wars". MC Hammer, Milli Vanilli, Tone Loc, Young MC, classic LL Cool J, along with DJ Jazzy and the Fresh Prince are solid candidates for first or second year inductees for a "hip hop hall of fame". I prefer 1983-1991 the most and since more years fall within the Golden Age option, I voted for that.

I don't like the silver age and beyond since for me, this was when pop music was ruined and preferred the genre as an alternative to others and it isn't as fun to me.
