Subject: Years that had a unique vibe

Written By: Rainbowz on 03/29/18 at 12:24 am

Inspired by the "Is 2007 its own atmosphere?" thread. I wanted to make a thread in which we discuss years that had its own unique vibe and atmosphere, years that didn't particularly feel like the previous year but also not the following year. Here are the unique years I've lived through.

2007:
I agree that 2007 did have its own atmosphere. The iPhone came out, the late 2000's were already in full swing, but at the same time it was still a core 2000's year and the music was mostly late 2000's but still had a core 2000's sound to it. Electropop wasn't popular yet. The Great Recession began in December 2007, so it didn't even happen yet for pretty much almost the entirety of 2007. Despite 2007 being the first full year where Facebook became available to the public, many people, especially teenagers, were still using Myspace.

2013:
The vibe and atmosphere that 2013 had been very distinct. It was when electropop was on its last legs, and the very earliest signs of Gen Z culture came in, music began changing with new artists like Lorde and Ariana Grande becoming more popular, but at the same time 2013 was the last year dubstep was quite popular and the last year where the fashion was still similar to the early 2010's fashion. Apps like Vine came out in early 2013 and was already very popular by late 2013, peaking in 2014, which I associate as the first full mid-2010's year culturally. Lady Gaga, which I associate as a popular artist of the early 2010's, had one popular song in 2013 called "Applause", though the song did sound different from her earlier work. 2013 was also the last year I noticed that the majority of teens still used Facebook. By the 2013-2014 school year, Instagram was the new "in thing".

2013 felt really weird because it was when early 2010s culture was on its way out and the mid 2010s were finally arriving but not yet complete.

2013 still felt early 2010s until 2014 came IMO.

I feel as if 2013 can't fully be an early 2010's year but also not a mid-2010's year. A lot of change happened that year, which puts it in a weird place, that's why it felt pretty unique.

2003 seemed to have a "fun" vibe to it.
Maybe it's because I was 5, turning 6 in December, that year, and therefore remember it through rose tinted glasses, but when you look at a lot of the songs that were big that year, a big chunk of them have this fun and exciting atmosphere to them.

2013 and 2016 for me. The start of the mid 2010's and the start of the late 2010's were iconic and crazy!
