Subject: Biggest Historical Event in Your Lifetime?

Written By: GH1996 on 05/07/18 at 1:10 am

What's the biggest historical event in your lifetime that you can remember?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've asked some family members this question and here's what i heard from them.

Great Aunt (Born 1917), "1929 Stock Market Crash / End of WWII"

Grandfather (Born 1935),"JFK Assassination / September 11th"

Dad (Born 1961), "September 11th / Moon Landing"

Cousin (Born 1987), "September 11th"

Myself (Born 1996), "September 11th"

9/11 by far because of the impact it had on so many people. Like I was talking to a kid on youtube who was born in 2006 and he told me he's scared of riding planes because of 9/11, I'm like, "dude you weren't even born yet but yet it scares you". I rode a plane 3 times and all of them were post 9/11 and I remember hearing anyone in my family being freaked out by terrorism when I rode the plane except maybe in 2012 due to all the wars terrorist attacks that was going on during that time, but we didn't think much of it because we were too excited about visiting Chicago.

The biggest event that I remember is probably the advent of the smartphone or the great recession. But the biggest event in general would definitely be 9/11.

The 2008 crash was very memorable for me, I was watching Good Morning America before school and I remember the day after that I had a fever and I was shaking in my bed with the light left on in my room so uncomfortable  :-\\

I didn't go to school the day Obama was inaugurated both times (Tuesday January 20, 2009 and Monday January 21, 2013).

It's definitely Trump getting elected. I remember on that day everyone was shocked and I even saw a few people cry. The only thing my friends wanted to talk about was politics. It was crazy and I was a little bit nervous myself as well.

As a conservative Republican, I'll admit that Trump wasn't my first choice. However, he was definitely a better option than Hillary.

There has been many historical events that have occurred during my lifetime, but the closes one that brings it home to me, is watching the passing funeral cortege of Princess Diana in 1997.

Continuing on with what I was saying before,

There are four different types of Trump supporters

1. The person who did not have him as their first choice, but preferred him to win over Hillary

2. The stereotypical "redneck"

3. The "Love Trump, Hate SJWs" people like Steven Crowder and Ben Shapiro

4. The fringe right. This camp is the one that is sinister/dangerous. These usually consist of Klansmen, identitarians, white nationalists, and neo-Nazis.

Even though both Richard Spencer and I may be Trump supporters, it is pretty clear that the former is the fourth category (the dangerous category) and the latter (myself) is in the first category (the "did not have him as my first choice" category).

3. Crimean Annexation

4. Recession

5. Obama Election

6. Brexit

7. Columbine

As a liberal Democrat, I'll admit that Trump wasn't my first choice. However, he wasn't a choice at all.

9/11 happened when I was a five month developed fetus. I don't think that'll count here. I was a lifelike thing, but not exactly born yet.

2017 Las Vegas shooting and the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting were some of the most tragic events in a while, and they both happened four months apart.. Both caused the gun control debate to gain traction.

Trump winning 2016 U.S. Election and Obama winning 2008 U.S. Election. Both very controversial. The 2016 U.S. Election was more controversial because of liberal America's outrage about the event.

I was 5-8 during the recession, and I didn't even know about it until a few years ago. My parents were and 40 when it happended, and they already had their life set up. The recession had a bigger effect on Millennials who were buying their first house.

The 2008 election will always stand out to me. I was in my last year of High School and we had school elections a couple of days before the actual election and Obama won in a squeaker IIRC. It was very contentious, I remember students actually yelling at each other in the halls over it. I remember the night Obama won, my father cried. Never saw him cry before that. He voted for Obama and I think was overwhelmed at how far the country had come (being born in 1954, he saw a lot of racial tension growing up)

I still think 9/11 changed everything. Honestly if there was no 9/11 there would possibly be no Iraq War and maybe no Obama and then maybe no Trump...see what I mean. 9/11 remains so important today and it shouldn't be underestimated. It is still absolutely THE defining event of the 21st century to me.

9/11 = Queen Victoria's Death
either Crimean Annexation or Trump Election = WWI

As for WWII's equivalent, that event hasn't happened yet since we're not even a score through the century yet.

How in any possible way is the Crimean Annexation or Trump Election anywhere close to be an equivalent of one of the deadliest wars in human history which involved so many countries accross the globe and changed the course of a whole century of history (leading even up to the most devastating war of them all, World War 2)?

Thinking of it, 9/11 is definitely the WWI of the 21th century as it lead to so many things, most importantly the World on Terror which in turn led indirectly to stuff like the rise of ISIS, the massive wave of immigrants, the terror attacks in the West and the election of Trump somewhat (still thinking the fear among people was an important aspect).

Agreed 9/11 was the similar equivalent of the Princip/Ferdinand assassination, both leading up to large scale wars
