Subject: 1988-1991 (Picture/Video Thread)

Written By: oldmusicfan on 03/19/20 at 10:39 pm

Who else on here loves this part of the late 80s and early 90s? Tracksuits, the NES, Tim Burton, Roseanne, and video rentals seemed to be everything to us in this part of the late 80s and early 90s. Post anything you love from 1988 to 1991 and discuss it here.

The greatest cartoon to ever come out of the 1980s. It had something for everyone. What’s not to love?

LA Gear was really taking off in 1988. The sneakers and shirts were quite popular in this part of the late 80s and early 90s.

Pee Wee’s Playhouse was the Saturday morning show we all watched. You never knew who would stop by. The Christmas Special from ‘88 was “major” (80s Californian slang for ‘big deal’).

Who didn’t cry for the animated shoe when it was dipped in toon acid? I loved anything with Roger Rabbit on it. The scene at the end where the Disney characters come together with the Warner Brothers characters was beautiful and well needed for the cartoonist community.

"Tears in Heaven" is a song by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings, written about the death of Clapton's four-year-old son, Conor. It appeared on the 1991 "Rush" film soundtrack.

The Simpsons was America’s new favorite new age prime time adult cartoon in 1990. There were stores with nothing but The Simpsons merchandise in them. The shirts were most important to people of all generations in 1990.

MC Hammer was the best party rapper of the 1980s into the 1990s. It started with “Turn This Mutha Out” and ended with “Pray”. Teenagers wanted the expensive Harem pants because of MC Hammer’s fame in the year 1990 and early 1991.

Milli Vanilli or Rob and Fab. What did we think about them? They had two regular release albums and a remix album. The remix album dropped in the same year when Rob and Fab were exposed as frauds.

Out Of This World or Alien Small Wonder. Evie froze time two years before Zack Morris did. I used to watch this on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Burt Reynolds played Evie’s father that was in space. The voice of Plucky Duck was her uncle. Cool show.

I loved that programme! Everytime I saw Evie doing that gesture with her fingers I always wished that it was real and that I could do it. :D (I bet many viewers wished the same, lol.)

Syndicated TV seemed to rule in those days. Here’s another one…

https://simplysupermanbatman.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/sbs12.jpg
The syndicated afternoon Lois and Clark. Wyatt from Weird Science was Superboy’s friend Andy from 1989 to 1991. Instead of Lois Lane, Lana Lang was used here. The best episodes featured characters from the comics like Bizarro and Mr Mxyzptlk.  This series was really popular after Batman was in theaters.

https://thenerdygirlexpress-files-wordpress-com.cdn.ampproject.org/i/s/thenerdygirlexpress.files.wordpress.com/2016/08/capturemysecretidentity.png
This was equivalent of Out Of This World for guys. Will Weaton was on Star Trek The Next Generation, Corey Feldman was doing movies, River Phoenix was young Indiana Jones, and Jerry ‘O Connell was in this. I wanted to fly like Jerry ‘O Connell did many times in this series. I can’t remember who the villains were in this. The show changed towards the end when it became more about friendships and relationships than super powers.

These were the Growing Pains and Rick Astley years. Mike Seaver was Kirk Cameron’s greatest performance in my eyes. Kirk Cameron definitely made that show worth watching. Rick Astley’s music seemed to go perfectly with Growing Pains and the times. I enjoyed watching Ben Seaver, also (especially in the latter years of the show).

Girls of all ages wore biker shorts with the neon strip down the center of the sides. Boys tried to do it in ‘89 and ‘90, but girls had more pairs.

The New Kids on the Block were the group that adults despised, but XYers and some Xers could not get enough of. The New Kids dressed in all of the latest styles of the time. Metal heads would joke they were The New Squids On The Block.

PG, PG-13, and rated R properties were for children all of the sudden. Cartoons, clothes, and action figures were released for movie characters like Robocop. Children at the time thought Robocop was real, so it was cool to see Robocop everywhere in the very late 80s and very early 90s.

Paula Abdul was the woman every girl wanted to be and every male wanted to be with. It was so cool that a Lakers cheerleader could find her claim to fame by singing. Some people confused Paula Abdul for Nia Peeples. Paula Abdul has the competition beat for a while until Janet Jackson came out with Rhythm Nation 1814. Janet Jackson was the undisputed Queen of the 1990s.

The late 80s-early 90s was before my time, but looking at footage of it, it truly seems like a different universe, and was the last true "analog" era. The "real 90s" (1993-1999) are also rather old, but 1988-1992 seems far older despite being situated right next to the real 90s. I can understand why the "Xennials" feel so ancient remembering this neon squiggly pattern era.

It was a spoof of Gremlins and we wanted an actual sequel to the first film filled with dark comedy and not Looney Tunes type antics.
