Subject: What were your parent's teen years?

Written By: violet_shy on 03/23/21 at 4:03 pm

This is always interesting!

My mother was born in 1957, and my dad in 1958. So they were 60s kids and 70s teens.

This could explain your seeming memories of the 70s and America songs when you weren't actually there. You may be having your parent's memories. There is a lot of research on "ancestral memory" or "genetic memory" where we not only remember what  we remember, but remember what our parents, grandparents, etc remember.

Mine both entered their teens in the 1960s. And they both entered their twenties in the 1970s.

That's so strange and interesting. It could be, but my memories and experiences go much deeper. I can remember things I never did in this life...like, who am I!? :o Weird.

That's different! They must be so nostalgic like my mother is sometimes.

Exactly! Remembering things you didn't do but your parents or ancestors did.  It's in your genes. Genetic memory!

No.

Too bad. We could use some first hand stories of Woodstock. Speaking of that, whenever there is talk of the obesity health epidemic in this country (which started in the 90s) I always tell people "look at a picture of Woodstock in 1969". Half a million people in various states of undress and not an ounce of fat anywhere! The eating habits in this country certainly have changes since then!

My parents were teens mostly in the 60s.  My dad went to high school with Bobby Curtola, a then up and coming singer who would go on to become a teen idol in Canada, charting 30 Top 40 singles between 1960-1970.  He met him in 1960 when Curtola had just signed a record deal and was in the charts with his first single called Hand in Hand With You

My dad was a teen in the early-mid 70s and my mom was a teen in the early-mid 80s (and for a few months in 1979).

My dad hates the '80s but you can tell he was an '80s yuppie. There's no '70s in him other than music. My mom wears excessive blush every now and then and she is too extraverted/talkative to be from the 21st century but other than that she's pretty modern.

Kind of. My mom will turn 70 later this year, and my dad will be 68 next month. They have lots of memories of their childhoods.

My mom was born in 1958 and my dad in 1959. I was in my moms belly for most of her senior year, and my dad still had another year left.

All my early memories are of the late 70s and early 80s and they actually happened to me or around me.

You appear to be hinting there is something of interest about your father. Interested in why you edited your original post to remove his date of birth (1952). I assume this exact year doesn’t fit with whatever tale you are now trying to tell us about.

My parents were different generations (big age gap).

Dad's teen years tracked with the Great Depression (entered teens 1930).  Mom's teen years were post-WW2 (entered teens 1947).

I wasn't sure of my dad's birth year because I hardly ever spent time with him. But my mother said 1958. My dad would have been 63.

You were born in 1974 right, your parents are almost the exact same age when they had you as when my parents had me.

The only difference is my mom was 30 and yours was 28/29, I'm guessing your dad was 33.

Both were teens in the 1970s, but seem to prefer the 80s and keep saying the 70s isn’t really part of they’re generation. Guess they preferred they’re 20s especially my mom. On the other hand she seems to think 90s music is crazy people music
