Can't speak to their entire history.  :-\\

I remember as a teenager they were popular.  This was the early/mid 1970's.

They're sneakers. And unlike jelly shoes they're constantly coming in and out of style, which is why is why I'm in this subforum

It became popular in the mid-late 1950s with the Greasers subculture and hasn't stopped since.

Converse sneakers are a perennial. They exist beyond fashion trends. Like Levi jeans. Like the denim jacket. Like the black leather jacket. Like the basic black Chanel skirt. You essentially answered your own question when you said 'they're constantly coming in and out of style", which means they never truly go away. So there you go! This question has answered itself in a very tidy manner.  :-*
