I saw it on stage with Dean Jones in 1972 in Massachusetts. Seeing that play inspired me to study history-especially to study about John Adams.

Good choice, but, what I want to know is...how did this song go from being a song in "The Sound of Music", a play and movie that has nothing whatsoever to do with Christmas, to being a perennial Christmas favorite? At Christmastime, you cannot turn on a radio playing Christmas music without hearing multiple and myriad versions of this song. What gives? This same thing happened with Joni Mitchell's "River", an extremely personal and melancholy (way TOO melancholy) song from her classic 1971 album "Blue". It has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas, save the opening piano bars which, I guess one could say, IRONICALLY play a few bars of "Jingle Bells" in a discordant minor key. And the first verse "It's coming on Christmas/they're cutting down trees/they're putting up reindeer/ and singing songs of joy and peace". From then on it has nothing whatsoever to do with being about Christmas as she goes on to detail the sad dissolution of a relationship. I guess that opening line and the inversion of the "Jingle Bells" melody are enough to make it a "Christmas" song in the minds of people who don't pay attention too much. These must be the same people who think Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a "religious" song to be played at solemn occasions and funerals.

Maybe this should be in the "rants" section. But you gave me such an opening.  ;D

Ever see "The Pirate Movie" starring Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins also from circa 1983?  It's loosely based on "Pirates of Penzance". I saw it in a theater back then. It's not too great.

I saw this movie in the theatre when it first came out.

I saw it on stage twice-once when my brother & oldest sister were in high school and their school put it on. Not too sure if one or the other was in it-or both.

The second time was a few years ago when our granddaughter was in it. I have to say for a 6th grade production-they were OUTSTANDING!!! Unfortunately, the day we went to see it, our granddaughter was sick so we didn't get to see her on stage.

Diane Keaton was also in it.

The Flesh Failures is probably my favorite from the play and it ALWAYS brings tears to my eyes. We went to see the play at the local college. The place was packed and we sat next to a friend (well, he is now a former friend but that is another story) who we weren't expecting to see there. That song came on and of course I was so moved by the performance and the song that I was bawling my eyes out and he started laughing at me. I just thought that was...I'm not too sure what the word I'm looking for. At least when I start crying during a movie/play and I look over at Carlos. He is usually crying, too.  :)

Madonna did ok in the movie-not outstanding. It really was a stretch for her. (Of course she is no Patti LuPone.) But what I really hated about the movie was the fact that they change "Another Suitcase in Another Hall". It was SUPPOSED to be sung by Juan's mistress but in the movie they had Eva sing it-I'm sure just to showcase Madonna.

This is from the original cast on Broadway: Patti LuPone, Bob Gunton & Mandy Patinkin.

I had tickets to go see it on Broadway when I was in high school (class trip). Unfortunately, my uncle passed away and that was the day of the funeral.

I did see a local production of it. The song, "I'll Be Surprising Good For You" reminds me of when Carlos & I were dating (which was also the time I saw that local production-even though I didn't see it WITH him).

This was written by the same people who wrote The Fantasticks. Unfortunately it is not preformed too much which is a shame. It is an EXCELLENT play. It is an allegory that takes place on New Year's Eve.

Spoiler Alert:

At the end, you realize that it a battle between the old year and the new-the young and the old.

With the film set around 1835, after Scrooge repents, he wears a modern day Father Christmas suit. The famous red and white Father Christmas suit did not exist in its current form until about the 1900s.

from her 1970 TV special "Raquel!" Apparently the network was skittish about Raquel's singing, so her vocal was dubbed in by Tina Cole of "My Three Sons" and the singing King Family fame. Turns out Raquel wasn't a bad singer at all, and went on to singing engagements in in Las Vegas, etc. where she got to use her own voice.

Every once in a while a King Family album shows up when I am rooting through albums in thrift shops. There were millions of them! (The singers, that is). I always look to see if I can find Katie.

When I was a kid, I remember having a dream about the King Family. (Yes, I remember this dream like I had it last night). They had a promotion where your family can be with the King Family. I guess my family won but I couldn't join them. I remember I was tending a gas station and I had a shotgun across my lap as I was watching my family dancing with the King Family on t.v. The next year, they had the same thing but most of my family didn't go, only one of my sisters and I went and we rode the train. We were actually sitting straddled on top of the train because it wasn't a full size train. That was when I woke up.

That was a dream that I had thought about most of my life never knowing what it meant. The dream came back to me when I was in the service. My sister (the same one who was in the dream) was getting married. Unfortunately, I couldn't get leave because I was taking a specialty class. I was upset because my entire family was going to be there except me. I was with a bunch of my co-workers/classmates. I can't remember where we were going but we pulled into a gas station and that dream hit me like a brick wall. (The shotgun could have represented the military-being "on duty.") Is it possible that a dream I had when I was about 6 or 7 was foreshadowing something that took place about 20 +/- years later?

Ok, one of my tangents. Sorry.

I saw this done where they updated it. Rather than Ed Sullivan, they were singing Dave Letterman. lol.

I was in this play in junior high. I played a teeny bopper. I almost lost my voice because I did a lot of screaming. lol.

This was from the first Broadway show I ever saw: A Chorus Line-The Music & the Mirror (Donna McKechnie)

(Sorry quality of the video is not too good but Donna McKechnie is OUTSTANDING! I didn't see her on Broadway. She already left the show by the time I saw it.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zI7CgQOIlgo

FYI: This part was written for Donna. She was in the original cast of Company and she also spent some time on Dark Shadows.

As a teen, I SOOOO wanted to do this dance. I would put on the soundtrack and did my own choreography to it. My voice was never as strong for this but that didn't stop me from belting out the lyrics.  ;D ;D  Between dancing up a storm and belting it out, I became very winded. Yeah, I couldn't do it. If I just sang the song or just did the dance, I may have been able to pull it off-but both? Nope!

I check it out and have posted a few things, but showtunes are not really this rock and roller's cup of tea.

"Hair", of course, is an exception.  ;)

From Fiddler on the Roof- Anatevka

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu_QQLM4biQ

I thought this is appropriate as to what is going on in Ukraine. History repeats itself-only this time is Czar Vladimir who is driving them out instead of Czar Nicholas. And yes, Anatevka was supposed to be in Ukraine. There is a town called that about 20 miles outside of Kyiv but the town was named AFTER Fiddler.

Unfortunately there isn't a video to this clip. (You are just going to have to use your imagination.)

From Fade Out Fade In. Carol Burnett & Tiger Haynes as Shirley Temple & Bill Bojangles Robinson doing "You Mustn't Be Discourage". And yes, you can laugh. You are SUPPOSED to laugh at this one.

Other notables in this show were Tina Louise (of Gilligan's Island fame) & Jack Cassidy (David & Sean's father & Shirley Jones' ex).

I really like this song (and I sing it a lot-usually in the shower lol).

Appropriate for the season. I'm still wondering though, if JCS is technically a musical. I know I'm hardcore, but when the original album came out in 1970 it was called a "rock opera" (remember, this was a year after the huge success of "Tommy") and there was no show to go along with it.  It was strictly an aural phenomenon. And the first few live performance of it (to capitalize on the success of the album) were staged as rock concerts. If I recall, one of them was at  Madison Square Garden. The performers wore modern clothes and sang into microphones like any concert. There was very little, if anything, in the way of staging or scenery. Then, of course, came the movie...
---I guess with all the theatrical versions that have since ensued, it has BECOME a musical.  :D

Appropriate for the season? Hmmm. What a coincidence.  ;) :D ;D ;D  Naaahh! I did it purposely.  ;D ;D ;D

There is a fine line between rock opera and musical. Technically, there are shows that COULD be concerned opera (rock or not) but is under the "musical" label-Les Miz, Hamilton, Miss Saigon and almost all of Webber/Rice (including JCS) could be considered opera since they are sung all the way through.

I would say it counts-it was part of the movie right? Not just the soundtrack? (I don't recall ever seeing that movie.) Yeah, this song has been sung in so many movies. But the one I posted was a parody and NOT the same song-just the same tune.

From Grease-Hopelessly Devoted to You. (1978)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU_pcU6AFPQ

This song wasn't in the original play.

I went to see this movie at the drive-in with my then (older) boyfriend and my sister in the backseat as a chaperone. When we went in, they didn't see Sis in the backseat so she got in for free. I said to her that I will try not to sing if she tries not to sing. Probably the wrong thing to say because during this song, she starts singing at the top of her lungs, "BUT NOW I'M OUT OF MY HEAD..." I kept telling her to shut up but that didn't help. I'm sure the people in the next car was wondering what was going on. And yeah, my boyfriend thought my sister was a bit...um...weird.

It was a double feature. American Hot Wax was the other movie (that sucked). During intermission, Sis went to the snack bar and my boyfriend gave me my FIRST kiss-not just the first kiss from him but my first kiss-EVER!

When it first came out, yeah, I loved it like everyone else. Loved the music but as an adult, I really hate the message it tells. A woman has to change and be "slutty" to get the guy she wants instead of being herself.

Yeah, it has been awhile.

This first piece is really a poem from The Fantasticks recited by Jerry Orbach (from 1960). I have yet to hear anyone recite this better than he did. The song follows the poem but I couldn't find the two on a single video so it is broken up-which is a shame. The poem just sets the mood for the song. Even if you don't listen to the song, PLEASE listen to the poem. It is SOOOO beautiful.
