Subject: 1939: The Year

Written By: batfan2005 on 03/26/22 at 11:19 am

With the recent world events, one couldn't help but to think of 1939. Particularly September 1 was a major date, but aside from the beginning of WWII that year was very eventful overall. The year also had a new pope, the birth of Batman comics, The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit", and localized wars in Europe such as the Slovak-Hungarian War and the end of the Spanish Civil War.

Honestly I think 1937 is a better starting point for WWII than 1939. In July of that year, Japan launched their full-scale invasion of northeast China who were still in the midst of their own civil war and elsewhere, the great purge began in the USSR imposed by Joseph Stalin which would be included in the eventual 25 million death toll of the Soviet Union by the war’s end in 1945 eight years later.
