Subject: Your favourite obscure or lesser known songs

Do you love any songs that not a lot of people may know about?  Share some here and who knows, you might even find songs you never knew about but now like! :)

Here is a song from 1983 called Guardian Angel by a German act called Masquerade.  By 1984, it was a Top 30 hit in Australia, and a Top 10 hit in several parts of Europe.

While it appears in the video that this act is a duo, they are not.  The band is the pen name of a late German singer named Drafi Deutscher, who sings both the falsetto and baritone parts of this and all songs released as Masquerade.  The two "singers" in the video were hired to be the face of Masquerade.  It's kind of like Milli Vanilli, only it wasn't a secret they were lip synching lol

Because it was only a hit in just a few countries, it doesn't typically get mentioned much in the world of 80s music, but if you like fun pop and new wave music from that decade, then you may enjoy this one!

One of my favourite songs of 2019 was called Only When It Rains by Frank Walker and Astrid S.  He's a Canadian DJ, she's a Norwegian singer and this peaked at #81 in Canada and #33 in Norway.  She's had a few hits on the US dance chart, but shockingly this was not one of them.  Do you like dance music/EDM?  This is a fun one!

My God, that's just about every song that's a favorite of mine. I post them here frequently. I don't follow the "all the hits all the time" policy of some.  :D

Having been a collector of 60's Motown music, I'm aware that many think of Motown music as overplayed.  Yet, here's a fine IMO album cut known only to those who have (or have heard) the album.  From their 1967 album, With A Lot O' Soul -

Nona Hendryx
"Through the Wire"
1989

Nona was an original member of LaBelle with Patti L, but went in something of a more rock direction. I first heard her do this  in 1989 on a great show of music and conversation on VH-1 hosted by Nile Rogers called "New Visions". Believe it or not, there WAS a time when VH-1 actually had good programming. That time is long, long gone.

Many years ago, I was given a CD set that had every single song that debuted on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart during the 1980s and I ended up finding many gems that never made the Top 40, but were more enjoyable than some of the ones that did.  Both of these were one hit wonders...

In 1978 the group Rufus featuring Chaka Khan released their Street Player album.  Though the album wasn't exactly obscure, its album cuts tend to be lesser known.  This delightful cut is a little different, among their more jazzy flavored tunes, and I like it.

While I do enjoy some of the older stuff that's lesser known/obscure, there are a few more recent tunes of that nature that I like, too.

For example...this one, which I posted on reply #323 of the Same Title Different Song thread a while back:

"We're All Playing In The Same Band"
Bert Sommer
1969

Bert Sommer was one of the artists who played at Woodstock in 1969, and this song seems to be about his experience there. He was also in the original cast of "Hair". But he is so little remembered that when they erected a plaque at the Woodstock site with the names of everybody who played, they inadvertently left his name out. They had to go back and squeeze it in. I think his voice sounds a little like David Cassidy.

The group America released a number of albums in the 1970's.  Their 1976 album Hideaway was less well received than its predecessors, being the first in a series devoid of major hits.  But like other America albums, the album consisted of a number of excellent cuts, including those that weren't hits.

I have many album cut faves of theirs - this uptempo gem is one I like, one I don't believe I've posted before on this forum.

One of the greatest cover songs ever came out in 1981 by an American duo called Nielsen/Pearson (aka Reed Nielsen and Mark Pearson).  A cover of the 60s song The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore, this peaked at US #56 in 1981.  I have a K-Tel album that this song is on and I've loved it for so many years and am still confused why it never became a bigger hit

TRIVIA:  On the label of the 45, it says from the forthcoming LP "Atomic Cafe".  For whatever reason, that album was never released so this song remains a single only release.  Wikipedia says the song was included on their 1983 album Blind Luck, but none of the releases of that album I have seen have it (Wikipedia lied?  Never! lol)

Thanks; I thought so too when I first heard it! I tend to favor catchy songs. 8)

On my SiriusXM app, anytime I listen to a song, it gives me an option to "Play Pandora Station" for whichever artist is playing, and that's how I find out about other songs by certain performers (not just the hits, but other tracks on the albums, including some deep cuts). The Pandora channels not only play songs by the artist whose name is on the channel, but also songs by performers with a similar music style. And the Pandora channel for Kelly Clarkson played that song once, so I had to give it a thumbs-up.

Ok, here is another obscure song. There was a group called The American Peddlers. They had an album called Survive which was all about the Air Force basic training. They used to play airmen's clubs on a lot of bases. I bought the album in tech school at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX and they signed it. (OOOH). Anyone who went through basic totally related to all of the songs. This one in particular really hit a lot of people-Yesterday I Was a Rainbow. It really describes all the thoughts you have in basic (Yeah, I have been known to shed a tear or two when listening to it-even now.)

Explanation: When you arrive on Lackland AFB, you are called a Rainbow because you are wearing all sorts of colors. Then you got your fatigues and you are called a uncanned pickle. About a week later, you get your nametags and then you are a canned pickle.

When we would see new rainbows coming in, we would sing:

Rainbows, rainbows don't be blue.
Our recruiters screwed us, too.  ;D ;D ;D

A laid-back album cut I adore from a not-that-obscure but somewhat overlooked album, by a group we all know.  IMO the album is excellent (albeit a bit disco-ey).  The album is The Jacksons, their 1980 album Triumph.  I love Michael's and Marlon's lead vocals on this cut, along with the delightful backing vocals.

That's the story of John Stewart's life. After his success with the Kingston Trio he made over 40 solo albums from 1968 to his untimely death in 2008. They were on a string of major labels, and then when his major label run was through he just put them out on his own. He never stopped. Many are brilliant, none are less than very good. Yet all anyone knows is "Gold" and thee fact he wrote "Daydream Believer" which was a smash hit for a bubblegum group. In fact, predictably, that was what was in his obituary. Though many did mention the 40 albums.

David Blue was a mainstay of the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early/mid 60s and was part of the crowd with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and the like. But he somehow never scaled the Heights of his illustrious companions and remained somewhat on the fringes. He died while jogging in Central Park in New York in 1982.

He also wrote "Outlaw Man" which The Eagles covered on the "Desperado" album.

I love the feel of this sad tale from 1968.

Fleetwood Mac
"Spare Me A Little"
1972

A lovely song by Christine McVie from the classic "Bare Trees" album. You know, Christine's songs from these earlier, pre-Buckingham/Nicks Fleetwood Mac albums aren't so different from her later songs that were hits. And I DID hear this one an awful lot on FM back in the day. I love the great  "watery" guitar sound during the solo (played by either Bob Welch or Danny Kirwan who were both in the band at the time). That sound just isn't used anymore, unfortunately. In fact, the guitar textures on the entire album are just extraordinary. Also check out how it suddenly shifts tempo at the very end for no real reason.

O0 Love this!  It sounds vaguely familiar - perhaps from a previous post?

(About that tempo shift, I've contended before that the 70's was the decade where such tempo changes were most common, but it didn't seem that anyone else agreed.  The thread I created about it died.)

This Marty Balin song from Jefferson Airplane's 1968 "Crown of Creation" album is just plain brilliant. I could say "if you wanna know what the 60s were like, just listen to this", which is true, but it's also too timeless to be confined that way.

"the world around you never catches up with you..."

Best Years Of Our Lives was a 1982 UK Top 5 hit song for the British band Modern Romance and is perhaps best known in the US through a 2001 cover version by Baha Men from the film Shrek.  In 1983, a Canadian all-female group called Mens Room recorded a version and while it did not become a hit, it was released as a single and appears in the 1983 film and on the soundtrack to Private School starring Matthew Modine and Phoebe Cates

In 1980, Bryan Adams released his self-titled debut album.  One of the singles from the album was called Hiding From Love, and while it failed to catch on world-wide, it also sort of technically failed in Canada, where it only peaked at #64 (Canadian Content regulations still got the song well-known on Canadian radio).  Quite a few acts would cover it, and the most successful version is kind of an interesting one...

A Scottish band called Rosetta Stone, fronted by ex-Bay City Rollers guitarist Ian Mitchell, released an EP in 1981 called Hiding From Love that featured 2 songs written by a then-unknown Adams (he had yet to have a hit song outside of Canada) and the song in question peaked at #46 in Canada by 1982 and appears in the 1983 film Class starring Rob Lowe and Andrew McCarthy

I always liked Colin Blunstone.  That is a good song there and sounds good!
Other than The Zombies, I know him for his work on several albums by The Alan Parsons Project and for a 1980 cover of What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted which he performed with a British keyboardist named Dave Stewart (not the one from Eurythmics)

If not for the 1991 version by Paul Young, this would be my favourite version...

Another song from Paul Kantner & Grace Slick. This one from their 1971 album "Sunfighter". It's about their daughter China Kantner, when she was a small baby. Grace wrote it, sings and plays the piano.

The picture on the album cover is baby China being held up out of the orange ocean by two arms. Look closely and you will notice the arms are from two different people. One is Paul's arm, one is Grace's (superimposed, of course). I had this album for years before I noticed the arms were two different people.

Happy birthday Paul McCartney! Didn't think you could find him in the "lesser known" category, but here's one. The first "Wings" album from 1971 is not one of his better loved albums, but I think this is unfair. I really like that album a lot, though I am in the minority. I think people expected something slicker  from him, rather than a rambling, bucolic, rough-edged hippie album. But too bad for them. No single was even released from the album, but, believe it or not, I actually heard this one on AM radio a few times back in 71. Despite it's relative length and the fact that it's not very commercial.

This cut probably falls more under "lesser known" rather than obscure.  But it's interesting and much forgotten, so I'll include it here.

The short-lived "Blaxploitation" film genre was popular during the early-to-mid 1970s.  There was plenty of music released that supported the films, some of it pretty good.  I don't know anything about the corresponding film, but James Brown released a song for the Black Caesar soundtrack in 1973 - the song became a minor hit but is largely forgotten.  And it tells a story.  It seems it can only be found on the soundtrack, or the single.  Here it is:

This song came out before the release of his album A Single Man and why he decided not to include it on the album, is quite the mystery and maybe a reason why this song, while recognizable to some to hear, is not that well known.  I mean you're never gonna hear someone be like, "Oh yeah, didn't he do that song Ego?"

Back in 1978 I went to a movie theater to see "The Last Waltz". Before the film they showed that "Ego" video. In those pre-MTV days that was one way to get these  "promo clips", as they were then known, shown. Although Elton had come out as "bisexual" in Rolling Stone in 1976 (a way to "cushion the blow" so to speak) I noticed in this video that they bring him a woman he rejects, they bring him a man he rejects, and they bring him an adolescent male, whom he accepts. I think this was his way of coming "even further out of the closet", so to speak. I'm not sure how many people noticed it at the time and nothing was ever said about it. Keep in mind, people saw this once at the theater and that was that. It wasn't like it was shown endlessly like they did in the 1980s MTV days of showing videos.

Rick James caused the most controversial moment at the all day/all night Farm Aid II on July 4, 1986, broadcast on the now defunct Nashville Network, by making statements against then-president Ronald Reagan , calling him a "wrinkled up old m-fkr", smack him, smack, smack, smack" as he beat his fist into his hand. He was yanked off the air mid-song. He also did a great song, possibly called "Farmers In Need of Help" which was seemingly made up on the spot. He was reading the words taped to the piano, and notice he even has to instruct his guitarist when to do a solo by singing "Kenny won't you play, Kenny won't you play...". Amazing, raw real-life stuff that used to go on in music!

Hi Fink!  Thanks for all your fine contributions to this forum.

Would you allow me to make a recommendation?  When posting a song embedded from YouTube, can you type in the artist name and song title above or below the embedded video?  Here is the reason - three (for example) years from now, you or someone else may be re-reading this thread.  If the owner of the YouTube video has taken it down (which happens a lot), the person reading it will see a black box and have no idea what song was posted.  Please give this suggestion some consideration, and happy posting!

The Vermont Waltz-Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen

I used this in a Vermont slideshow that I once created-in fact I named it "My Vermont" from the lyrics of this song. (Actually, I am thinking of redoing it.)

Every time we travel, when the plane touches down in Burlington airport, I will sing, "Wherever I wonder, I'll always come home, home to My Vermont." I will also sing it when we hit the Vermont border if driving (which is usually only about 2 miles from home).

With Christmas just around the corner, here is one that I find often slips under the radar.  Captain Sensible is best known as a founding member of the punk rock group The Damned and as a solo artist, he had a few top 40 hits in the UK, however this was not one of them.  Released in 1984, One Christmas Catalogue only peaked at #79 in the UK which many did not consider a hit as at the time, the British publication Music Week only printed the Top 75 of the Top 100 chart.  This song however is gold and I listen to it every Christmas!

In 1983, a popular Australian group called Dragon released a single titled Rain and it peaked at #2 in their native land.  For the world outside of Australia, this song and the band themselves are quite obscure, however when released in the US in 1984, this song peaked at #88 and became a one hit wonder there.  Don't let that low chart peak fool you though.  This song is so very catchy, you won't want to stop listening!

In tribute...

A lesser heard gem from Christine McVie on Fleetwood Mac's 1974 "Heroes Are Hard To Find" album. The last album with Bob Welch and the last before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined. I always liked this one.

And this one from Fleetwood Mac's classic 1972 "Bare Trees" album. This song got FM airplay back in the day. And the band continued to do this song live even after Lindsey and Stevie joined. The guitar tones on this song (played by Bob Welch and Danny Kirwan) are extraordinary and are of the kind not heard anymore.

O0 Great tribute picks.  "Prove Your Love" is new to me; "Spare Me A Little" sounds familiar.

Of all the songs on "Rumours", and for all it's massive fame, this is the first song I ever heard from that giant album. Back in 1977, before it was in the stores, this is what I heard on FM radio. Mick Fleetwood, the "daddy" of the band, so to speak, is convinced it is about him. Christine never confirmed that. in fact I seem to recall an interview where she denied it.

O0 Thanks for posting these great Christine McVie tunes.  Excellent call on Oh Daddy, and I appreciate the "rumours" info, too.  (Using the UK spelling of "rumours")

Crosby was an accomplished sailor and owned a 60 foot schooner for many years. He was profoundly influenced by whales.
