Subject: Beatles songs covered by other artists

I thought it would be a good idea to start a new topic on Beatles songs covered by other artists, hoping that we collect obscure versions.
So let's start with from 1967 "Eleanor Rigby" by Joan Baez.

I will spare you from having to listen to any of the "muzak" style covers on this album by The Percy Faith Strings. But, if nothing else, I thought the album cover itself was kind of cool when I first saw it back in 1970 when it was new.

From wiki:
"Although Universal had high hopes for the movie – anticipating "this generation's Gone with the Wind " – it worked out differently. According to film historian Leonard Maltin's TV, Movie & Video Guide, the picture "just doesn't work" and "ranges from tolerable to embarrassing. As for the Bee Gees' acting, well, if you can't say something nice..." On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 11% score based on 27 reviews with an average rating of 3.9/10. The site's critical consensus reads "I thought you might like to know that the Beatles (aka the act you've known for all these years) are ill-served by this kitschy, aggressively whimsical fantasy film that's most certainly not a thrill"."

One of my favourite cover songs of all time is a cover of a Beatles song. I had this compilation cassette tape in 1991 called Monster Trax that featured a bunch of hits that were out at the time and one of the songs on it was Strawberry Fields Forever by a British electronic group called Candy Flip. If I ever had to make a list of my 100 favourite songs of all time, this one would be in there!

One more before I forget as we mustn't forget the Dutch studio act Stars on 45, or as they were known in the UK and some other parts of the world, Starsound
In 1981, they released a song titled Stars on 45, or as it was known in the US/Canada: Medley: Intro 'Venus' / Sugar Sugar / No Reply / I'll Be Back / Drive My Car / Do You Want to Know a Secret / We Can Work It Out / I Should Have Known Better / Nowhere Man / You're Going to Lose That Girl / Stars on 45. It was a cover medley opening with Venus by Shocking Blue, Sugar Sugar by The Archies and ending with 8 Beatles songs. It peaked at #1 in the US, #2 in the UK and became a monster success in Canada where it spent 12 consecutive weeks at #1 and went on to be the #1 song of 1981
7Xl-myBdvLg
The song was so popular in the US/Canada that a second volume titled Medley II, or under it's official title: Medley II: Stars on 45 / Good Day Sunshine / My Sweet Lord / Here Comes the Sun / While My Guitar Gently Weeps / Taxman / A Hard Day's Night / Please Please Me / I Want to Hold Your Hand / Stars on 45 was exclusively released in the US and Canada that same year. It was basically the last 4 minutes of the version heard on the LP and peaked at #67 in the US and #19 in Canada
94QaFosHM8Q
Also in 1981, Australia got an exclusive version of Medley II titled The Beatles/George Harrison Medley which was more of the same, only it didn't open with the Stars on 45 chorus, but it included covers of Things We Said Today, If I Fell and You Can't Do That

English post-punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees released a cover version of "Dear Prudence" as a single in 1983. The single had been recorded at a tumultuous time for the band; guitarist John McGeoch had left the band due to his purported alcoholism and had temporarily been replaced by Cure frontman Robert Smith. This version of the song became the band's biggest British hit, peaking at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart.

"Something" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1969 album Abbey Road. It was written by George Harrison. Together with his second contribution to Abbey Road, "Here Comes the Sun", it is widely viewed by music historians as having marked Harrison's ascendancy as a composer to the level of the Beatles' principal songwriters. Among the song's many cover versions, Welsh singer Shirley Bassey recorded a successful version of "Something". It was released in 1970 as the title track to her album of the same name.

We may have a technicality on this one. Technically "Twist & Shout" was a hit for the Isley Brothers in 1962 (though it had been recorded previously by The Top Notes in 1961). The Beatles version, recorded in 1963, was a cover of The Isley Brothers hit.

All of that may be true, but still, does it make the Salt-N-Pepa version a Beatles cover?
Mind you, I am not saying that there are not "covers of covers". Sometimes if a person is covering a song it is clear that they are following an arrangement that was already a cover, rather than the original. That's a cover of a cover. For example, if someone was covering "I Will Always Love You" it would be pretty obvious if they were covering the bellowing, yelling Whitney Houston version, which would then be "a cover of a cover", or if they were covering the original Dolly Parton version (even if the cover was quite different to the Parton version), in which case it would be "a cover".

In 1970, Stevie Wonder covered "We Can Work It Out" on his album Signed, Sealed & Delivered, and released it as a single in 1971. The single reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Wonder's version earned him his fifth Grammy Award nomination in 1972, for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. In 1987, Paul McCartney assembled a group of known singers together under the name Ferry Aid to record a cover of 'Let it Be' as a charity single to aid the families of the victims of the Zeebrugge Ferry Disaster that made international news. It became a UK #1 hit

"I Wanna Be Your Man" is a Lennon–McCartney-penned song first recorded and released as a single by the Rolling Stones in 1963, and then recorded by the Beatles for their second studio album With the Beatles. The song was primarily written by Paul McCartney, and finished by Lennon and McCartney in the corner of a Richmond club while Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were talking. The Rolling Stones' version was the group's first UK top-20 hit, peaking at number 12 on the British chart.

Not many people remember that in 1964 The Supremes did an entire album of covers of Beatles songs and songs by other British invasion bands called "A Bit of Liverpool".

Joe Cocker has been mentioned already but no one has posted his classic Beatles cover, "With a Little Help from My Friends" from the 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. This cover became a success in 1968, topping the UK Singles Chart, and an anthem for the Woodstock era.

English band Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers released the first cover version of "Got to Get You into My Life" in August 1966, released the same day as the Beatles' album Revolver, on which the song appears. The record reached No. 6 on the UK chart, becoming Bennett's biggest ever hit. Bennett returned to the songbook of McCartney/Lennon in 1968 when he recorded "Back in the USSR" as Cliff Bennett and His Band.

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is a song from the 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. In 1974, English musician Elton John released a cover version as a single. Recorded at the Caribou Ranch, it featured backing vocals and guitar by John Lennon under the pseudonym Dr. Winston O'Boogie (Winston being Lennon's middle name). The single topped the US Billboard pop chart for two weeks in January 1975 as well as the Canadian RPM national singles chart for four weeks spanning January and February. The B-side of the single was also a John Lennon composition, "One Day (At a Time)", from Lennon's 1973 album Mind Games.

"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is a song written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon–McCartney), released in 1967 on the album of the same name. In 1967, Jimi Hendrix played the song live at the Saville Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue, which was leased by Brian Epstein, only three days after it had been released on record, with McCartney and Harrison in the audience. Another live version by Hendrix recorded at the Isle of Wight Festival was included on a posthumous live album, Blue Wild Angel: Live at the Isle of Wight.

The Beatles' decision not to issue "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" as a single in the UK or the US led to many acts rushing to record the song, in the hope of achieving a hit in those countries. A recording by the Scottish pop band Marmalade, released in 1968, became the most commercially successful of all the cover versions of songs from The Beatles. It reached number 1 on the Record Retailer chart (subsequently the UK Singles Chart) in January 1969, making Marmalade the first Scottish artist to top that chart. Marmalade's recording sold around half a million in the UK, and a million copies globally by April 1969. During the group's TV appearance on BBC One's Top of the Pops to promote the track, four of the five band members wore kilts; their English-born drummer instead dressed as a redcoat.
