Naw, those are the best. Usually, you waited so long to take them. So it's like... super fantastic.

they are ok....but they are a royal pain whenever you are in a public restroom and someone is clearly waiting their turn for your stall...and you just keep peeing.....and suddenly you feel kinda embarrassed about peeing so long....and you can just imagine the person on the other side of the stall saying to themselves, "For the LOVE of God....stop flippin peeing already"

'Space Toilet

Some of the oldest toilet facilities that we know of are in 4,000-year-old bathrooms in the Minoan Palace at Knossos (in what is now modern Crete, a Greek island). Vertical stone pipes carried hot-and-cold running water to and from the bath tubs. This palace also has what seems to be the very first flush toilet in history - a toilet with an overhead water reservoir.

Going to the toilet is easy down here on Earth, because gravity pulls your solid and liquid wastes down, away from you. But in the micro-gravity in space, bodily wastes tend to just float around. That's why NASA spent US $23.4 million in designing and building the toilet for the Space Shuttle. It deals with what they delicately call "digestive elimination".

The very first "space toilet" was the simple "do it in your suit" version. Thomas Wolfe describes what happened in his book The Right Stuff. The first manned American space flight in 1961 was a 15-minute hop-up-and-straight-down-again, rather than a complete orbit around the Earth. Nobody had even thought of supplying toilet facilities for a 15-minute flight. But there was a major hitch in the launch procedure. Alan B. Shepard Jr. was stuck in his space suit, lying on his back ready for launch, inside the space capsule for many hours, under the unforgiving gaze of the TV cameras.

An astronaut with The Right Stuff would not compromise the launch by leaving the space capsule, especially while on TV - so he eventually urinated in his suit. However, Mission Control was monitoring his heart, via signals from electrodes stuck to his chest. As the warm wave of electrically-conductive electrolyte-rich urine swept up his suit and washed over the electrodes, the heart monitors in Mission Control went crazy. Soon after, Freedom 7 was launched into space. So the first American manned space flight was in a wet suit.

For the next flight, the astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom wore a quickly cobbled-together extra-large nappy.

The nappy then evolved into the large plastic bag with double-sided sticky tape - for sticking onto the buttocks. It had indentations in the plastic at the sticky tape end. The astronauts had to shove their fingers into the indentations, grab the faeces, and toss them down to the far end of the bag, where they would stay once the bag was rolled up. But there were a few occasions when faeces did apparently escape the bag, as it was being unstuck from the astronaut's bottom. The cameras had to be switched off to protect the sensibilities of the American viewing public.

But the current Space Shuttle Toilet, properly called the Waste Collection System (WCS), is a fully-integrated multi-function system. It is a flushing toilet - but it flushes with air, not water.

The WCS sits in its own tiny rest room in the middeck of the crew compartment. The room is about 75 cm wide, and so is the commode.

The astronauts are held on the commode/toilet by a bar across their thighs. As you know, NASA always has backups for everything. Here, the backup system to the bar is a set of four Velcro thigh straps. And of course, there are foot restraints as well.

The urinal works for both males and females. It's basically just a funnel attached to a flexible hose. It can be used whether you are sitting on the commode, or standing. The urine is drawn along by flowing air. The mixture of liquid and air from the urinal is carried to a rotating chamber. Centrifugal force throws the liquid to the outside, from where it travels to the waste water tank. So yes, the urine does hit a spinning circular object...

The commode seat is made of a contoured, compliant semi-soft material. Not only does it locate the user in the right position, but it also makes a good air seal with the buttocks of the astronaut. The hole for solid wastes is about 10 cm across.

When the toilet is in use, it has a continuous flow of cabin air whistling in through holes under the seat. This airflow of 850 litres per minute is essential to push the faeces toward the bottom of the toilet, because there is no gravity to make them drop. The airflow draws faeces from the commode into a porous bag. The bag is made of a multi-layer material that repels water. The bag traps solid wastes (including tissues), but lets the air through. It also stops any free liquids or bacteria from leaving as well.

Once astronauts have finished using the WCS, they open the valve and expose the contents to the vacuum of space. All solid wastes get instantly freeze-dried and de-odourised. They are then brought back to Earth for analysis and disposal.

The liquid in the waste water tank is dumped overboard from time to time. And out in space, this can be a splendid sight indeed. One of the astronauts has said "there is nothing as beautiful as a urine dump at sunset".'

Murphy's Law seems to love following me around everywhere -- the other week I was in a used record store (and I look around for hours!) but the "pee attack" didn't come until AFTER I started shopping. GRRRR!

So after about 10 minutes of trying to force it away, I had to hide everything I'd picked up into a semi safe spot (which luckily was still there when I got back) dash out of there to the nearest Burger King. I don't think a marathon runner could've beat me! ;D

PS: I was also the master of "holding it in" as a kid. Especially on car trips, lol.
