Subject: Al vs. the raccoon

Written By: AL-B Mk. III on 05/23/08 at 3:12 am

At least 3-4 times a week I walk about 2 miles along the same path each day for a bit of moderate exercise. Today as I was walking I happened upon a little furry creature about 5 feet from the sidewalk that was either taking a nap or licking itself. When I got up close to it it turned out to be a raccoon and I think I startled it, because when I got a couple feet away from it, it jumped up, then crouched down and hissed at me as if it was going to attack me.

I'd always heard that raccoons are mean little critters and if they happen to attack you they can really tear you up, so I just continued my pace and walked past it yet kept my eye on it (because I figured the best thing to do is not act threatening towards it), but as I looked back I kind of shot it a mean glare myself, as to say, "Hey, I'll leave you alone but you'd better not mess with me either because I'll kick your ass."

Which wasn't entirely true because I was more than a little scared but I figured the best thing to do was not show it any fear. However, my tactic worked because it didn't come after me.

I got to the end of my route, turned around, and was walking back home and sure enough it was still there in the same spot, curled up in a ball just like before. This time however, I figured I wasn't going to push my luck so I crossed the street about 20 yards before I got to it and made sure I got well past it before I crossed back over, and it didn't notice me.

I'm just glad that I didn't end up in the emergency room today getting a bunch of stitches and rabies shots.

LOL!

The raccoon that I encountered did appear to be licking his junk, if you know what I mean.

Maybe he was lonely and just wanted to hump my leg instead of tear me a new cornhole, but I didn't want to take my chances.

Nasty!!

Yesterday I stepped out of my front door and there was a large dog on the doorstep that made me jump out of my skin. Luckily it wasn't vicious (I'm not a fan of big dogs I don't know) Just tired and wanting to rest, preferably inside my house!  ;D The owner came and coaxed him away.

Once when I was about 5 years old, I was sitting in the back seat of my dad's car when this huge Great Dane just kind of moseyed up to the window. I remember being kind of freaked out since when you're that small, a Great Dane looks as big as a horse, but I also remember that it had a gentle demeanor to it so I wasn't completely scared, and it just walked up to the car, stuck its head through the window, and started licking my face.  ;D

And one of them bit Paul McCartney, and he died of rabies in 1969.

Ever see a dead raccoon on the side of the highway, lying on its side with its legs sticking up in the air after rigor mortis has set in? (I saw one like that just the other day as a matter-of-fact.) I've always thought it would be funny (in a sick and twisted way, of course) to pull over, back up to one, pick it up and stand it right side up.  ;D

Hibernation?

Subject: Re: Al vs. the raccoon

Written By: greenjello74 on 10/17/08 at 5:41 am

I had a cat that bought home a raccoon to pal around with. It used to eat the cats food alongside of the cat. We did not let the raccoon inside the house though. We ended up keeping the garbage in the garage, on garbage day we hjad these cans that secured the lids on somehow. Been a while can't really remember.
If you have a few bucks and the room you could check out those Rubbermaid things you put garbage cans in. I think they either lock or have some device that would make it more secure. Plus they would be too difficult for the critters to knock over. Unless they have been eating steroids from your garbage!!!! ;D ;D ;D

But be careful they are full of rabies and all sorts of cooties.
