Subject: is it me or EBAY???
Written By: saver on 08/21/04 at 6:07 pm

Why is it I hear people saying how they are making money hand over fist on EBAY and I sell some legit products and they won't have a buyer??

These included a good pair of Zodiac Beatle type/Boot(they probably don't make them anymore and they were quite popular if you had them) and autographs of Gale Gordon-the Lucy show??

I next will have a  Simpsons shirt fromthe studio. Do you think they really want that?

It all depends if other people are selling the same thing you are and how well they are selling theirs. It depends on the price. If its cheap it'll have more hits, more bids, and it looks better, but you take the chance of selling it for that price. Hows your feedback rating? How many is next to your name? Do you accept a lot of methods? I mean it could be a million things. Whats your ebay name i'll look at your stuff

fornow I haven't sent anything through to sell because of the last couple of results..I have another put it upfor me as they sell many imprted products in the hundreds and thousands ..my little stuff was for about $50 - $100..it got afew hits as it was for fans of Muppet memorabalia or collectors who wanted a cast show jacket- (satin) and it had a few views but no takers...the other people I know sold car parts for $5.00 and always did well....also I looked into other personal autograph sites and the seller wanted $40 and the bidders were up to about $30...My next try will probably be for Simpsons shirts 'issued by the studio' which may start at $40 some normal ones are going at $20-$25...Oh well....then there is some other auction site, but I wasn't sure if they are as good as ebay?

If people can sell "bagged" air, then you should really have no problem selling your items.  ???

you would think..Know someone selling car parts get $5 here and there but for  a $50+ itemno takers...I am considering a Robert Blake belt buckle I have that may be rare.it has him as Baretta engraved into it..maybe it's in the timing too??

It is all sales and marketing.  The people making money are selling what people want to buy.
You may think that what you have to sell is great, and it may be, but you are selling to a small
niche.  There may not be a whole lot of people who are looking for Gale Gordons autograph,
or a pair of Beatle boots, unless there is a Beatle in them.

If you want to sell successfully on ebay, SELL... talk about what you're sellling... be personable... listing an item with a description like a catalog makes you another "me too".  If you can avoid it, don't use fix pricing... use auction format with a VERY LOW starting price so many bidders will be bidding against each other for what you have.

Okay, I'm giving it my 3rd try to sell something on ebay...it sounds pretty reasonable this time for Simpsons merchandise-for the real collector or fan...If it doesn't sell...I can't think of WHAT they will buy and it COSTS me each time (as I go thru a service to list)...

AND TO THINK SOMEONE SOLD A 10 YEAR OLD CHEESE SANDWICH FOR $28,000???
I am willing to put up my autographed picture of Jesus for half that!
(and I do have an ediible item that is weird...I may attempt to sell it and who will bet it will sell in a snap, compared to the clothing items I've tried selling in the past?)

Okay! I am officially declaring the EBAY SYSTEM SUCKS!!!!

They  may be known for a good place to try to sell things and may HAVE sold items but I could never get a decent item sold after 3 tries!!!

I'm going back to garage sales!!

I think, too, that the people who really make good money are the ones who are offering a LOT of stuff.  Nobody sells everything...but if you have a ton of stuff up for auction, you will sell some of it.

I, personally, am an Ebay-aholic.

Just before the Christmas Holiday is not a real good time to sell either, as most people are spending their money in regular stores. What you need to do is do a lot of research to see what is and isn't selling. And as long as you start your items off under $25., if you don't sell you are only out 30 cents.

The stuff I had for sale were from the Simpsons, rare t-shirt you would think someone would surprise a collector with for XMAS...

I had no taker and the show is planned to be on another4 or 5 years with average store merchandise..this I had from their early days and party.

You may soon see my proof how goofy things work when I put up an autographed picture of Jesus for CHRISTMAS....if I even get a dollar for it, I'm ahead from 3 other attempts at REAL items!

I have to agree with Meriadoc.  I sell frequently on eBay and some times it takes more than one try.  I had a couple of items that I THOUGHT were in hot demand and then I checked and found that most items like mine were only listed for $1.00 and NONE of them were selling.  It definitely pays to research

My lister also thought all the items would sel and they were fairly priced...how could someone NOT need a rare Simpsons shirt??

Or shoes they no longer make,

I may have luck with my community newspaper for free!

Yeah, I must agree with the fact that e-bay does suck for selling, especially for beginners. Beginners have no feedback and most people don't give newbies a chance. Believe me, I know. :P

I believe in order to be successful with e-bay, one has to do much more than be personable; one has to shell-out the extra money for all kinds of advertising upgrades. That is something I stubbornly refuse to do. I guess I'll be poor forever. Good thing I'm used to it.

hi,
I was a current seller on Ebay up until about a month ago. It's true that you can make some pretty decent money selling items on Ebay, but there are a LOT of dry times as well. My forte is "vintage/retro" items and I would sell anything from vintage t-shirts, books, movies, stickers, etc..... I did a LOT of research, spending time on Ebay checking out what kinds of things sell the best in the vintage category. I too have become really frustrated though. When it comes to the point that you are spending more money listing than what you are bringing in...that's when it's not worth your while. I would list anywhere from 40 to 100 things at a time, and not only are there listing fees but there are closing fees too for every item that you sell....so...the more you sell it for, the more Ebay makes off of you. Another frustrating thing is that I know of certain Ebay sellers that must have the "Midas Touch" or something...no matter what they put up for sale, there are bids on it. I have even seen exact shirts that I sold for perhaps $5 or so going for $50 plus when they are selling it....well I guess it doesn't hurt that they have a very well endowed model sporting all of their clothes in their pictures in their descriptions....but there stuff is no better than anyone elses.
Ebay can be a positive thing, if you have lots of items that are in demand, but it can be a really crappy experience too. I always wanted to maybe start a really cool "vintage/retro" auction site...I think it would do really well beings that the "vintage" thing is so the thing right now. If I ever get around to doing something like that I will be sure to pass the info along to you all.
In the meantime, I suggest doing research on prospective items, look up and see if other sellers are listing similiar things and how much they are going for. I also suggest starting the item at a very low opening bid (you can always put a reserve bid on the item)...but it looks much more attractive when perhaps Simpson shirts are starting at $2.00 instead of $20 or $30....people are definitely most likely to place bids on the item that has the lowest starting price, and as I said, you can still put a reserve price of anything you want it to be...that way....your item won't sell for any less than you want it to. I also recommend checking out www.andale.com. This is a cool site that helps you with tracking auctions, and they even have an option of putting any item into a search engine and it will tell you it's past bidding popularity...I think it only costs a few dollars a month to do so. I hope this helps you out a bit. I was totally obsessed with the whole Ebay thing....but my husband and I are going through some tough financial times, so it's impossible for me to be able to continue listing lots of things at the present time...however, I do still have lots of things on stock, so if anyone would be interested in any vintage items (izod lacoste shirts, vintage band tees, etc, etc) or you are looking for something in particular...just let me know!!

Later,
Erin  ;D

Ebay's increasing the heck out of their fees and people are leaving, moving on to other auction sites and opening their own websites. Masses of people are also presently shutting down ebay stores left and right because they can no longer afford to have them. It's pretty bad, to the point where there is a petition even circulating on the site started by one of the members with thousands of signatures. :o

It's true...I had to shut down my store and furthermore not even use my account anymore because I just can't afford to any longer. They are making a KILLING on how much they charge people to sell, considering the amount of people who use Ebay (even many from other countries)....and to think that Ebay just started with two college students in their dorm room....I guess they've come a long way, haven't they??

I finally sold 1 item(the cheapest of the lot)...the others were RARE t-shirts and no one wanted them...as well as when I put up vintage 'Beatle boot' style shoes from a semi-defunct company..next I have an oddity to try and it may do nothing or go for hundreds...how does everyone find out about the odd stuff (i.e. cheese sandwich and ghost that were for sale)amidst all the other items? Is there a item of the day listing?

It makes me quite ill when I see someone claiming an average walking cane to be haunted on an eBay listing and then seeing a big online casino outfit pay thousands for it. :P

Many other listings are absurd, to say the least. I actually looked around the house and considered claiming something to be haunted to see if anyone would bite on eBay because I sure as heck need the money. I finally decided I couldn't stoop that low. ::)

E-mail the seller and ask what the hold-up is. If no response within 48 hours, contact e-bay live help for suggestions.

If you do get a communication from the seller and you are assured of the receipt of your item, then fine. But as soon as you receive your item, leave your complaints in the feedback. Feedback is the #1 profile killer. E-bay does have buyer protection, as does PayPal, to those who qualify.

Well, here goes another try soon...
I will(probably along with others while the irons hot), put up my 'Johnny Carson' Memorabalia up..
Any guesses..saw the routine Jay Leno does on his show about odd ebay items that sold or did not..No one went for a petrified wooden likeness of him yet someone paid a couple of hundred for another food item that looked like some celeb.

Time to check the going rates for Carson autograped photos.

Too bad ebay is not as strict with their sellers as they are with the buyers. I purchased something from a seller and so far I am not the only one who has been ripped off yet this person continues to sell on ebay.  :-\\ :-[ They have over 100 negative feedbacks in a year and 55 of them just this month.

It's all a matter of whether or not people take action when necessary, like reporting the person and taking the proper steps to check out your insurance options, collect your refund, and/or getting the person permanently banned from eBay. When all of the appropriate steps are taken, eBay does come through. It does take time, patience and persistence. It seems a great many people give-up and take their losses, thus letting these thieves remain in the system.

I've been selling on eBay since 2000 & it is now my primary source of income.

I agree with the previous posts... there are many factors involved with a successful sale.  Customer demand, collectibles, competitive pricing, wording & TIMING are all important.

I downloaded the TurboLister program a few months ago & I list all my items in that program.  When eBay has a promotion (like the 5 cent listing day they just had on Valentine's Day), I upload everything at that time.  No joke, I saved over $100 in listing fees alone during that one promotion.

There is a new feature now called "Best Offer" - I've found it to work wonders.  People can send you email with the price they are willing to pay for an item & you can accept or deny their request.  Being I have SO many items (currently I have about 300 running on eBay), I tend to accept the offers as long as it won't cause me a monetary loss.

I try to have all my auctions end late on Sunday nights.  This way, my items are pretty close to the top of the list when everyone is browsing over the weekend.

Good luck!
Barb

Wow, finally got a bite1
So far, Simpsons had to find stuff didn't sell, or beatle boots from a defunct company..BUT sold an autograped celeb photo nearly $80..Guess what? A collector is selling the SAME photo for $250!Said he woulda bought mine for $100...
He says he finds ebay to be a place for good deals..I'll say!

I have another celeb photo that was taken with other guests at a party  in the background and the 'collector' tells me no one will want a photo of someone with others in the picture...I hope to prove him wrong.... :-\\

Make sure your listing goes in a catagory that people running a search will find it. I recently bought a AM/FM 8-track/CB radio for a 79 Cadalic for $15, listed in Miscellaneous. At that time there were 2 others in Car Radios. The cheapest of which went for $279. People running searchs in Radios weren't shown the Miscellaneous listings. W

Well lookie lookie.....
As you can see from my dated message..I'm ahead of my time.
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wed. 5/18/05 does a humurous routine of the ridiculous things that did or didn't sell on EBAY from a Worlds Record Ball of Tape to a stuffed squirrel holding a bottle of booze...WELLLL! This night one of the items they found was AN AUTOGRAPHED PHOTO OF JESUS!!!!!!!!

Did you think it would get ANY money??????

YEP!!!! Nearly $40.00!!!!!!

ARE MY IDEAS WORTH ANYTHING NOW THAT THEY'VE BEEN USED????

ANYONE ELSE CATCH IT ???
Until next time, whenI sell it , I can't tell you what my next item will be....or someone ELSE will rake in the dough!
