I like your list lebeiw15, but I'm surprised by some of your entries...
9.  The Logical Song--Supertramp
5.  Goodbye Stranger--Supertramp
Both from the same album but you think they're better than say ST's "Take the Long Way Home"? ???

Good pick for #1.  ;)

Anyway, keep this list. Five years from now you'll drop and add to this list different songs but some will stay on. Why will some stay and others won't? That's the interesting part.

:) ;D

I think the older songs have an edge on the newer stuff. The newer stuff still needs to stand the test of time with me. It's sort of like Rick James and "Super Freak", I liked it 14 years ago but not now. Sorry!

I can give a good 50 or so songs for every decade since the '60s, but I'll settle for just 25 today...
(oh, and my apologies to some artists that I really do like but who didn't get included on today's list -- that means you Elton, War, Steely, Little River, and the rest.)

25. Night Fever - Bee Gees (1977)
24. Tighter, Tighter - Alive & Kicking (1970)
23. Better Than You - Lisa Keith (1993)
22. Isn't It Time - The Babys (1977)
21. Cherish - Madonna (1989)
20. If Only You Knew - Patti LaBelle (1983)
19. Lady (You Bring Me Up) - The Commodores (1986?)
18. Ah! Leah! - Donnie Iris (1980)
17. The Heart of the Matter - Don Henley (1990)
16. Train in Vain (Stand by Me) - The Clash (1980)
15. Rock With You - Michael Jackson (1980)
14. Take the Long Way Home - Supertramp (1979)
13. It's My Life - Talk Talk (1984)
12. A Night to Remember - Shalamar (1982)
11. Stomp! - The Brothers Johnson (1980)
10. You Are My Starship - Norman Connors (1976)
9. I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash (1972)
8. Things I'd Like to Say - New Colony Six (1969)
7. O-o-h Child - Five Stairsteps (1970)
6. You Ought to Be With Me - Al Green (1972)
5. Oh How Happy - Shades of Blue (1966)
4. Things We Said Today - The Beatles (1964)
3. If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot (1971)
2. I'll Be Around - The Spinners (1972)
1. Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell (1968)

CeramicsFanatic, great to see Gerry Rafferty as your #1 choice!  Good song. 8)  But where's "Baker Street"? ???

Oh goodness, I can't believe I forgot "Baker Street"!  It is indeed a great song and should have been included in my Top 15.  :-[

I think the older songs have an edge on the newer stuff. The newer stuff still needs to stand the test of time with me. It's sort of like Rick James and "Super Freak" with me. I liked it 14 years ago but not now. Sorry!

I can give a good 50 or so for every decade since the '60s, but I'll settle for just 25 today...
(oh, and my apologies to some artists that I really do like but who didn't get included on today's list -- that means you Elton, War, Steely, Little River, and the rest.)

25. Night Fever - Bee Gees (1977)
24. Tighter, Tighter - Alive & Kicking (1970)
23. Better Than You - Lisa Keith (1993)
22. Isn't It Time - The Babys (1977)
21. Cherish - Madonna (1989)
20. If Only You Knew - Patti LaBelle (1983)
19. Lady (You Bring Me Up) - The Commodores (1986?)
18. Ah! Leah! - Donnie Iris (1980)
17. The Heart of the Matter - Don Henley (1990)
16. Train in Vain (Stand by Me) - The Clash (1980)
15. Rock With You - Michael Jackson (1980)
14. Take the Long Way Home - Supertramp (1979)
13. It's My Life - Talk Talk (1984)
12. A Night to Remember - Shalamar (1982)
11. Stomp! - The Brothers Johnson (1980)
10. You Are My Starship - Norman Connors (1976)
9. I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash (1972)
8. Things I'd Like to Say - New Colony Six (1969)
7. O-o-h Child - Five Stairsteps (1970)
6. You Ought to Be With Me - Al Green (1972)
5. Oh How Happy - Shades of Blue (1966)
4. Things We Said Today - The Beatles (1964)
3. If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot (1971)
2. I'll Be Around - The Spinners (1972)
1. Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell (1968)

:) ;D

It looks like we like many of the same artists - just different songs by them. "Time Passages" over "Year Of the Cat"? "Count On Me" over "Runaway"? But we both gots the "Stomp!".

Wow!  someone else actually remembers "Pick up the Pieces" !!  How 'bout "Love's Theme" by Barry White?  Or "Take 5" or "Take another 5"?  Yeah R&R Fan I like the older stuff too.  I got turned on to BNL in 93 and have been a die hard fan of their stuff since.  I still think Gordon and Born on a Pirate ship are their best albums(Albums? I just dated myself)  I must add;
Spiro Gyra: Morning Dance
Herb Alpert: Rise
David Benoit: MWA

Here are just a few favorites. And since Elton is probably my favorite artist, I'll just list one of his and there are way too many Beatles songs that I like, so I'll leave them off all together. And there is no way I can put these in any kind of order, so here goes!

Harmony--Elton John
Crystal Blue Persuasion--Tommy James and the Shondells
Shine on you Crazy Diamond--Pink Floyd
Superstar--Carpenters
Red Rubber Ball--The Cyrkle (Don't ask!!) :)
Wishing You Were Here--Chicago
How Deep is Your Love--Bee Gees
River--Natalie Merchant
Secret o' Life--James Taylor
Lets Stay Together--Al Green
Strange Magic--E.L.O.
Baby Come Back--Player
Stone in Love With You--Stylistics
There's a Kind of Hush--Hermits Hermits (Memories of Childhood!!)
Good Vibrations--Beach Boys

Yes!  I loved Steppin' Out and that is why I bought the album.  I didn't know any of the other songs.. but I'm glad I got it, 'cause they were all almost as good as Steppin' Out.  "Real Men" became a favorite because I got that album. :)

I don't have Look Sharp.  I  plan on getting that real soon.

Well, thanks, I'm glad you appreciated my really long list.   :D

Yeah, some of them are probably a little unknown..I listened to a lot of Canadian music, which is where some of them came in, and a lot are songs from albums, that may never havce been released.  But they're all good!  ;)

OMG, I thought I was the only one who remembered this!  :o 8)  I love Jefferson Starship!  :)

Oh no, I love Jefferson Starship!  They were one of those bands, that I had liked We Built This City, and Sara, but had never heard of the others.  Then a radio station I listened to started playing some of their older stuff when they were doing a concert in the area, and well, I got hooked!  I thought Nuclear Furniture was just an all around spectacular album--even as a teen, it just really made me think (which is something when you're a teenaged girl!  LOL!  ;D).
I always thought that Jefferson Starship had some really thought-provoking music..and Starship was just a commercial machine.  Though, I did enjoy them too!   I actually saw Starship once when I was in Jr. High, and then I saw Mickey Thomas (who had been the guy lead singer) alone years later, and he did do some of the "old stuff" too.  I really enjoyed them.  :D

I have to tell you that I prefer Jefferson Starship from the time that Marty Balin was the lead singer (mid to late-70's).  You might remember "Miracles" and "Count On Me"...those were sung by him.  I like Grace Slick, and Mickey Thomas did a good job, too, but I kind of lost interest in them when they dropped 'Jefferson' and just became known as 'Starship'.  As you said, they went very commercial.

I agree.

Jefferson (whatever) is an odd band. Three decades of music. Hard to believe. For me I always liked the stuff they did in the '70s ('75-'78 to be exact). There just aren't many bands that can say they had hits in 3 different decades. Easier said than done I guess. The Rolling Stones just made it in '81. Stevie Wonder did it. Any one else? ???

It's impossible for me to list my favourite songs. A lot of my favourite songs are by my favourite artists, and those of you who have gotten to know me through my posts will know who they are by now, I think. :) So, instead of being repetitive and boring, I'll just leave it at that. I do like other individual songs by lots of other different bands, and maybe I'll try and come up with a list of those. But my very favourite songs are by my favourite artists. :)

The Bee Gees managed four decades of hitmaking - sadly, no more with the demise of Mo...

Not a band, but a honourable mention to Sir Cliff of Richard who's not only managed to hit in five decades (50s - 00s), but has also managed to score #1's in four of 'em (50s - 90s)...only in Britain, of course...!!

Even if I forgot to put 'em on my Top 50 list, I gotta give a shout to anything from Huey Lewis - that was Marty McFly's favorite rock singer after all! ;)

Plus, I've listened to him since I was little - and, just like Starship, he's from the north Bay Area -- where we lived in the mid 80's when he was popular, so again, some sentimental geography thing too, LOL!

I like most songs by Keane, I like Embrace's Ashes (fave song ever), Looking As You Are and Gravity, The Killers have had a few really good song (Somebody Told Me's my fave though), and I like some of the Stereophonic's songs too. I guess i'm picky when it comes to music because I like certain songs by an artist, but not others, so my taste in music is very varied  :D

Definitely interesting, FaultyDog. I didn't think anyone apart from me remembered 'I promised myself' by Nick 'Never took my clothes off in a launderette in my life' Kamen.  ;D

'You little thief' by Feargal Sharkey is quite a surprise too - good song.  8)

Glad you share my opinion on these gems. Nick Kamen actually reached #6 back in 1990 in the Netherlands. And I've always preferred You Little Thief over A Good Heart or Listen To Your Father (also great songs, but I've heard them a bit too often).

Nick Kamen wasn't so fortunate here in the UK with it as the song got to No 50!

Lol. I'm a bit the other way, I much prefer 'A good heart' to 'You little thief' and 'Listen to your father' but all are great tracks.  8)

Aww, despite the fact that Foreigner is one of my favorite 80s bands (I grew up on stuff from that era!) I still found that statement to be pretty funny.

Just curious, what makes them so bad? Is it the ballads like "I Wanna Know What Love is" (not surprisingly my fave of theirs - one of the first songs I ever liked! I think it hit the charts in early '85 when I was a three-year old tot!)? ;D

EDIT - New Top 10 list (it changes all the time!):

Say it isn't So - Hall & Oates
Sister Christian - Night Ranger
Call it a Loan - Jackson Browne
Primitive Lover - Stan Bush (obscure 80's rocker - sent to me by an online friend recently)
After All - Peter Cetera
Take it Easy - Eagles
Sail On - Lionel Richie
Girls - Dwight Twilley
That's All - Genesis
Stay Tonight - Benjamin Orr (other guy from the Cars - this song is a bit similar to "Drive")

PS - I stayed with the 80's to make it easy (well I cheated with "Take it Easy" but the Eagles did 80's solo careers so I can bend the rules there!). ;D

Yeah I like them!

Good list though, Jim - even though I mostly like pop/rockish stuff, I'm into some Iron Maiden and early Metallica too - the whole "Ride the Lightning" album is really underrated IMO. If metal wasn't as underground in 1984, it could've been a huge seller - but I mean that in a good way (I became a fan through the Black Album which some people hated for its commerciality).

My favorite song today is Jesse's Girl - Rick Springfield. I went to the store and it came on the radio so I cranked it as loud as my speakers could handle and it's in my head now.

In the video, it is Peter Kay who is singing.  As I recall, they spoof "An Officer and A Gentleman" and Lionel Richie's "Hello" video

Primus is strange some of the time.. too strange, almost... other times, they're pretty good. They did a great cover of "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", I think.. I don't even like most stuff of that sort.

I only know Tommy The Cat and Jerry Was A Race Car Driver... I don't like either... but they might have some better stuff I haven't heard... anything's possible.  I can't believe "Stay Forever" (a really good song) is by the same artist as that horrible "Push The Daisies" song that was played every fifteen minutes back in the early 90's...

Primus.. yeah... they vary a lot... I don't like either of those songs, actually.. "Those Damned Blue Collar Tweakers" is a good song, as is "Frizzle Fry"...

Ween.. they also vary a lot. They kinda matured as the years went by... most people will find the Pure Guava album intolerable, but most people enjoy White Pepper.. they really grew up, you can see.

Bright Eyes.. he's very hit or miss. There's no "decent" song of his for me, I either really like it or really hate it. So far, he's only impressed me thrice ("Waste of Paint", "False Advertising", "When The President Talks To God").

Man.. I have no clue. I would call half of their stuff Indie Rock and the other half Folk Rock, or alt-folk.

I'm not sure what emo is in music terms. I think it's more of a stereotype than a genre. It seems to me that several genres fall under being "emo".. what has been described to me as being emo is basically what every vocal group has been... including The Beatles... People singing about past loves and being depressed and stuff.

The call letters sound familiar... but I'm not sure which one it is.. I usually listen to KFRC or 95.7 MAX.. the only one with current music I know of is Alice (97.3) but whenever I turn to that station it's usually commercials or other in-between-song talk.

I see Emo in the same light I see Grunge, in the fact that there is no distinct sound to both those genres, rather an idea or stereotype amongst several artists or bands.

I think Indie is really more of a stereotype then EMO is.. pretty much every band that doesn't get radio play is assumed to be Indie Rock.

Man.. I have no clue. I would call half of their stuff Indie Rock and the other half Folk Rock, or alt-folk.

EMO is more of a magnification of your problems to make yourself seem like a Romantic hero rather then a person.. The Beatles may sing about heartache, but they don't claim that no one on Earth has suffered like them. They also don't make a few bad things mean their whole life is undesirable... EMO is kinda like teenage whining, where emotional is just.. well, emotion.

My dad actually put it pretty well.. EMO music is usually held together by a few common traits.. either a vague 80s synth-pop sound, a vague folk sound, or (in the case of most Pop EMO) a vague metal/punk sound. They really never sound as dedicated as any of those actual genres, but they sound like they're almost like one of those.

Thanks, I know it's somewhat of a B side type of song off of Abraxas, but I love the tone of the guitar, it's that good ol' hard Carlos Santana sound. The keyboard is great, and the vocals and lyrics, I've always loved to play it over and over and that whole album is pretty darn tasty.

give-me-your-money carry-that-weight-the end medley and about 100 other Beatles tunes could make the list.
I would add to my list 3 Eagles tunes:
Hotel California
Already Gone
Take It Easy (my all time fav)  a couple of goals of mine include taking pictures, one would be the classic Abbey Road pic, and the other would be Standing On A Corner in Winslow Arizona, maybe next to the welcome to Winslow" sign or something.

I still pretty much stand with my previous list (rather surprisingly).
The only three I'd ditch are #47 (Join Me by Him), #39 (Tom Traubert's Blues by Rod Stewart) and #36 (November Rain by Guns n' Roses).
Instead, I'd put in:

Precious - Depeche Mode
Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap
Human - The Killers

I'd also like to point out that my #1 is not the original 1964 version, but the 1987 version from the album "Strange Weather".

I then remembered there was this thread, but I also seem to recall one about "what songs are on your playlist/mp3 player/iPod?" or something similar. Couldn't find the latter, though, so maybe I should start a new thread addressing that matter...? ???

I'm happy to continue that one or start a new one, your choice.

Not exactly the one I had in mind, but thanks anyway. :) I recall an older thread (at least I think it was) where people had listed their entire iPod/mp3 playlist, or parts thereof. It had more responses as well. But maybe I remember wrong.  :-\\

Anyway... I think it's probably best to start a new thread.

6. Jackson Browne -Running on empty
7. Derek and the Dominos -Layla
8. Beatles - A day in the life
9. Supertramp -Hide in your shell
10. Pink Floyd - Comfortably numb
