Subject: Save Howard!

Written By: Rice_Cube on 12/08/06 at 3:41 pm

Just gonna try this out to help our buddy here :)

Howard lives in Queens, NY.  He needs a job.  His job coach hasn't gotten results since Au Bon Pain.

So I want Howard to see this thread, tell us what his job experience is and what his skills are, and then let's help Howard set up a resume and some accounts on Hotjobs.com and Monster.com, and see if we can't do a better job.

What do you say, Howard?  It can't hurt.

So the ball's in your court now, Howard.  If you need help, post here and let's see what we can do!

Wooha!

Need some info first buddy...

Job experience?

Job skills?

What do you like to do?

What do you think you CAN do?

That is good to start with ;)  I've got some time, I'm on VACATION!  *w00t*

Go ahead and post your job experience and your job skills and someone who's good at writing resumes can get one started for you.  You can add your name, address, and phone number yourself if you don't feel like giving it out.  Once we know what you can do and what you have done, I'll start looking at Monster.com and see about setting you up an account there.

Howard, the point of this thread is to think about it now.  You need a job, and there's plenty of people here who are willing to bust their asses to find you one, even if they live clear across the country.  You need to be more proactive about this.

Okay, write it down on a napkin or a piece of paper at home so you can brainstorm this stuff.  Get back to this thread when you're ready.  I'm going home to CA tomorrow but I'll see what I can do (or other awesome Penguins can do, since they're around still) when I get to a computer.

We'll get you a job yet!  :D

Howard, just by googling "employment queens new york", and clicking on "local results for employment near Queens, New York", there are 4 pages of employment agencies that could help you more than your current job coach.  Here are 3:

Adecco Employment Services - 2.1 miles W - 9745 Queens Blvd, Rego Park, 11374 - (718) 459-8300
Accountemps - 0.7 miles SW - Suite 201, 80-02 Kew Gardens Rd, Kew Gardens, 11415 - (718) 997-1140
Authentic Employment Agency - 3.7 miles NW - 8205 Roosevelt Ave, Flushing, 11372 - (718) 565-0582

It can't hurt to call one of them.  I recommend the first one, I know a couple people who got jobs within a week or so of calling them....

But in the meantime...try looking through these job sites and see what happens.

No Howard.  Do not use horoscopes to help you find a job.  People have given you plenty of avenues in this thread to help you find work.  You have to physically get off your butt and do the work yourself if you want employment.  Prayer, horoscopes, meditation....they may soothe your soul, but they won't fill your bank account.

There was this crazy goofball old guy who used to work at the campus bookstore with me.  Years later, I went to an Oakland A's game and saw him passing out cotton candy.  Then a couple weeks after that I was at the Giants' ballpark and saw him selling hot dogs.  It was awesome.

Remember Howard, if you're having trouble with your resume and applications and your job coach is inaccessible, post here and there shall be help!

Need that info though...see first page!

I think I could save this relationship, there is a possibility. Most likely by this month or maybe even January.Even if this relationship Isn't saved by Christmas or New Year's cause I know I don't want her to be lonely on Christmas & New Year's.We'll both be thinking about each other so much,There's always Valentine's Day.I told Robin that the next job I get will start me off with Part Time first then later on down the road,Maybe add some hours or more days depends on what job I get next to get to full time eventually.Hey,I never expected to get laid off from Au Bon Pain, that was the least of my worries on that day coming home from the dentist.I had her on a string meaning she thought that Au Bon Pain was eventually going to turn to full time but you know something,It didn't and she kept telling her Parents that "Howard's doing good,He's trying hard as he can cause I love him a lot",now look what happens months later, temporary breakup.I'm not proving anything to anyone except me and My family cause I know I'm doing good and trying so hard.It takes a lot of patience, time and hard work.We will get back together,I promise.Right Now,I'm kissing ass so I'll do anything at this moment for her and her impatient Parents.  ::)

Howard, you weren't stringing her along.  You thought the ABP job would turn into more hours, but it didn't.  That's not your fault.  She's got you thinking you were to blame, or somehow you led her to believe that you'd get more hours even though you never intended to.....that's HER problem, not yours.

I know you hate for us to keep talking about you finding a job, but let me give you one more suggestion.  Are there any openings at a local hospital?  You should try to find a long-term job.  Most people I know who work at the hospital here, have worked there for years.  My sister-in-law has been there almost 20 years, she started out in food service and has worked her way up to a better position.

I just think these little retail stores aren't going to provide a long-time job, they usually have high turn-over rates.

High turnover means High staff turnover. This essentially means that employees are constantly being hired and leaving. Training somebody for a retail job isn't hard and the stores will often lay off employees when business is slow.

High turnover means High staff turnover. This essentially means that employees are constantly being hired and leaving. Training somebody for a retail job isn't hard and the stores will often lay off employees when business is slow.

I hope I won't be laid off again,I don't want to tell my sweetie if it happens. :-\\

Let's not jump the gun,I'm too wound up. :(

Howard, thats the point of telling your job coach of wanting a job in a hospital instead of a retail setting.  There is LESS chance for you being laid off in slow times, etc, because a place like a hospital is always busy and always needs people like yourself.

Besides, your job coach shouldn't be coming up with just one possible lead every couple months, he ought to have you in his office nearly every day filling out applications for a different place.  God..I live up here in the boonies in upstate NY and if I were in your position, I could find at least 6 places daily where I could fill out an application for employment.  Down there this joker should be finding you at least 12 applications a day, especially if all he's focusing on is retail .....

Yes I have and It's hospital(s).

Have you ever inquired about regular employment in the hospital that you volunteer at?

Dude. There are quite literally several thousand hospitals and medical facilitys in New York. Hell, in Queens alone there are loads. Ask around, go to the front reception desk and ask. Say that you've been volunteering at a hospital for a long time and you think maybe you'd like to do it as a job.

To summarize for our friend Howard:

1.  Your job coach sucks.  Ditch him.

2.  You need to get a friend or a family member or even your parents to be more proactive in helping you get a job if you are unsure of how to do job applications and job searches yourself.

3.  You cannot wait for rabbits to crash into trees.

Let's see if we can get this month started on the right foot eh...

but Howard, you MUST do more than just say, "thanks for your help guys", "I'm hoping for something better"etc.....in order to get ANYTHING in life...you have to take action and DO IT.  When I heard there was a job opening at my current place of employment....I didn't just sit there on the couch and say, "oh, hmmm....I guess someone will come and knock at my door, and hold my hand....and direct me to the job"....no...I got up off of my butt, went to the place, put an application in....and showed some initiative that I was actually interested in working there....and guess what? They interviewed me and hired me on the spot. What I am saying is that if you show some gumption and show these people at these places that you are actually interested in working there...chances are, you will get a job...whereas, if you sit on your butt and wait around until something happens....this time next year, you will still be sitting there collecting dust.

If I was 33 and still living at home, no matter what the reasoning for it was, you bet your sweet bippy that my parents would be busting their ass to help me find work so that I could be more independent and living on my own.  Now, my parents would never throw me out....they know I'm having a hard time finding work right and they've both been there and they are very sympathetic.  But they're still helping me.  I want to move the hell out of here, they want me to leave and they are helping me achieve that goal.

In December 2005,I told him my relationship was failing and she was giving me a deadline so he told me that he had connections with Au Bon Pain to get me a job fast to save my relationship so it worked for 9 months and now back to sqaure one again but without the deadline.

What "connections"?  IMO, "connections" are people you can call and *whammo* you have a job (or at the very least, an interview).  I could probably walk into any one of these places where he supposedly has connections, talk to the manager, tell him your situation and get you an interview.

Face it, Howard, the longer he keeps you on his calendar as a client, the longer HE is making $$ off of YOU.  He's feeding you a dump truck full of BS and you're buying it.....

Your therapist is right.

Here's an idea.....everywhere you go, ask for an application.  If you go to buy coffee or lunch or clothes or whatever, get an application, take it home and fill it out.  If you need help, ask one of your parents to help you or ask one of us.  The next time you go to get coffee, lunch or whatever at the same place, take it with you and turn it in.  Most places, even if they're not hiring right now will give you an application and keep it on file for when they are.  It can't hurt and who knows, you might even get hired on the spot like Erin did :)

Howard.

Praying alone will not help (some might argue it won't help anyway).  You have to get out there and do something.  Mama K's advice is good, go out and pick up as many application forms as you can and fill them in.  Most of them will be straightforward to fill in and you can ask your dad or here for help with anything you think is tricky.

Don't talk about doing it.    DO IT and then hand the forms back.  Next week you can chase them up.

I agree with Karen, Howard. Yes, it's nice and good to pray for things that you want...HOWEVER, you can't just sit there and expect everything to be handed to you....you have to be willing to do the footwork in order to get things you want in life. ;)

Howard...I was just reading what you wrote in Spaceace's ask me thread...about Robin posting her profile on that Jmatch website.....I looked her up and found her....I don't mean to sound rude or make you feel bad...but this doesn't seem like someone who is in favor of a TEMPORARY breakup....she is already out looking for a new guy....you really need to move on Howard.  :-\\

ya, that's really not cool at all Howard.  People who tell others that they are doing a "temporary breakup"...do not usually put themselves out there and advertise themselves like that. That just shows that this girl has no heart...and doesn't care about you or your feelings. Hmmm...maybe you should put up an ad....see if someone nice responds....it doesn't hurt to try. ;)

why not? Howard, Robin is NOT coming back to you. She is currently, as we speak, advertising herself on Jmatch website....looking for another man to involve herself with. She is making it VERY clear that she has moved on....and it would be very healthy for you to do the same. I'm sure it is.  However she is looking for another man.  You saw it with your own two eyes.  She is not acting like a woman who plans on getting back with you anytime soon.  You do not deserve this shrew, dump her ass.  Let her go find someone else if that's what she wants.  The last thing you need is to sit at home, pining away for a woman who wants nothing to do with you anymore.

No one is saying it's going to be easy.  Look at the last time you broke up with someone (the ex-girlfriend a few years ago).  It wasn't easy to move on, but you did.  Sitting around moping and thinking of "what could have been" is only going to make it harder.  You never know, you might just find "the one".....let me tell you, if Robin's putting her profile on dating websites, she ain't "the one".....at least not for you.  You can do better than Robin

On October 18th,It was on a Friday Evening,A Young Adult group Night Recreation for people with disabilities,She wanted to talk to me in private but she had said something to me I don't know what it was but it sounded sort of nasty. Before the talk,at home,I made a "Get Back Together" card hoping that Her And I would be a couple once again but after she wanted to be just friends I was so distraught and upset that I tore the card up and threw it in the garbage. She didn't know where the relationship was going after almost 5 years(would've been 5 in 2 months)so after that,I saw her on occassions as friends in my YAP but that was the end of Her.

I know.Annalee had Down's Syndrome and was a little older than me.It was kind of hard to be together with a girl who had Down's Syndrome. Her and I were both wrestling fans,She liked HHH and I liked Sable. We liked Bowling and doing good,I always was invited to Her Parents house for lunch or dinner and watching wrestling PPVs,BTW they were Italian. The only thing that was similar we were both in programs,She went to UCP and I went to CGS.Both of us were on SSI.After a while she wanted me to get her an engagement ring but how could we if we were on SSI and attended programs? That's ridiculous. ::)

If you're confident and comfortable with counting money or maybe operating a forklift you may be able to get a 40-hour schedule as a utility clerk or a cashier at the supermarket.  Just keep working hard and work your way up the ladder.

What skills do you have?

9-5 jobs usually are found in offices and banks.  You can work a full time job, but your hours may be different than 9-5.  Any job that is around 40 hours a week is considered full time.

My husband employs many full time people, most of which work a few nights a week.
When I worked at a department store, I was full time.  I usually had to work 2-3 nights a week.

Do you think they have them somewhere else?  Nope, I distinctly remember seeing some Long Island Biker Chicks From Hell.

You guys might really have fun together.  Riding along, the wind blowing through your hair, the wind blowing her teeth out....you know, if you get too picky you'll never meet anyone.... ;D

All silliness aside, here's some actual, real advice if you don't mind....when you tend to look really hard for someone, it becomes impossible.  I find when I adopt the "I don't need a man" attitude, it suddenly rains men.  Maybe if you just figure you'll find someone when it's meant to happen, then it will.  I met my son's Dad when I was helping a friend move-I wasn't looking for anyone, and I certainly wasn't dressed up to meet anyone.  We hit it off, exchanged numbers, hung out a few times, then started dating. The fact that he turned out to be a complete idiot is beside the point, I'm just saying if you don't try so hard, it will happen when you least expect it.  :)

Here's a trick;

If you see someone that you think is hot, but you're afraid to really talk to them, find something you can give them a compliment on.
Something like, "Nice sunglasses" or "Nice car".  NOT "nice boobs"...the kind of compliment that's not an obvious pickup line....then just walk away.  Yes, just walk away.  If she thinks you're hot and you just walk away after saying something nice, she'll come over to you and give you a compliment, or find some reason to get another compliment from you....  ;)    ( I know this works because it helped me when I was afraid to talk to guys!)

If she says thanks and keeps on going, or doesn't acknowledge the compliment, then you didn't really put your ego on the line, right? That way you know without a lot of work whether she would talk to you further or not.

I've noticed that guys seem much more confident if they act like they don't really care...just be happy go lucky-don't act like you're walking up to a lion to talk to her..women can smell the fear!!  ;D

P.S.  These tricks usually work better when you don't have a computer in your face.  ;)

She always worried about a guy who was a part timer like me but pushed a guy (like me) into full time but refused and sometimes threw job applications in my face, just never had much fun was always way too serious for me but I wanted to keep her in my life because I enjoyed being with her for the love of work and money for those 3 1/2 years that we were together.

Plus she didn't have the libido like I had, hers was low and mine was high, sexually we didn't connect. :(

I think you should look for a job. You have plenty of time and if you find a job before pathmark closes you won't have to worry about unemployment.

but that means that on your days off you should go out and look to see if any businesses are hiring in the area. It'll take some work but jobs are easier to find when you go out and look for them.

Now is a good time to put in applications because a lot of places with be losing their summer help 'cause kids/teens will be heading back to school.  Don't wait.
I'm sure there are many places to apply, fast-food places, other super markets, Target or Walmart.

At first when I was trained in 2007 I had a good attitude but a few years later,I had a high stress level, things got to me like stuck together or broken wagons I got so emotional over it,I don't know why I did but that's the way I am.

It wasn't in my pocket I had to change into my shorts in the Pathmark bathroom for work and the phone might have been in the bathroom and I checked it and the phone wasn't there but if someone does return it they should return it to the frontend at Pathmark cause that's where I was last.

But then again it was just a cell phone...those are easily replaced.  Your mom may have been upset but believe me, losing a cell phone is a pain but not that big a deal.  You forget, I work in a police dept. People lose things every day.

I know you lost your wallet a couple weeks ago and your phone the other, maybe she's just mad because the two events are so close together....still, in the long run howard. We get wallets and phones in here every single day so you are not the only one....

I understand that a cell phone can easily be replaced a cell phone replacement if not found is a pain in the ass. To get a new one that phone had all my numbers in there so now if a friend of mine wants to call they'll get a "phone not in service note", I can easily call on the regular house phone and tell them what had happened. I have a history of losing things, I don't know at this point I can ever be trusted with hanging on to things anymore. From wallets to keys to cellphones and metrocards within the past 20 years.

I'd look into acquiring a backpack and put all your stuff in it.  It works for me.
Unless of course, you think you'd lose your backpack.

Try and pay attention and develop a system for yourself...a routine..where you can remember to put your wallet/metrocard/phone back in the same place all the time. A backpack is a good place.

Gee Wildcard, that really sucks.  :(  Keep looking at the positive side of things. Keep trying to laugh. Only way I get through the day myself . It's amazing you can record music and play those games so well. You must be a strongly driven person to achieve all that.  Wish I had some of that in me.

use to sing my parodies with a midi background.  Below Average Dave offered to record for me like he did for so many other people.  I told him I'd do  the recording myself because I love to sing.  He was amazed by this.  I don't have any of those recordings up at soundclick any more.  I'm driven by love and it can't be stopped by much if anything.  Then I went deaf, wasn't getting comments on my parodies usually, and no new ones at soundclick.  Other things were depressing me too.  Now that I got a CI and am going to get it adjusted again, I'm thinking about recording again, but now that I'm not going to get a decient sounding midi without paying for it,  I may end up using my harmonica or do something silly.  I don't play guitar or anything like that. I have some old videos here http://s219.photobucket.com/profile/rocksannwastaken
