It converts to approximately $1.04 or £0.57 a litre.  I think we'll all say "you lucky beggar".

Petrol is about 92p a litre here with diesel slightly more.

So 1.50 is low compared to other countries?  :o

I'll tell my friends to stop complaining then  ::)

I guess that depends on what proportion it has gone up in relation to how much 'average' wages have gone up or how much other every day product prices compare across the three countries.

Pioneer Valley area, Massachusetts--

Yesterday the cheapest I saw here was $2.99, most expensive was $3.19 for cheap grade in both cases.  I think premium was up to $3.34.  It cost me $35.80 to fill my tank from near empty, and I've got a 12 gallon tank!

I haven't ventured out yet today, but I'll bet they've gone higher.  I'm soooo looking forward to the cost of heating fuel this winter!

Well, Jacks, lemme figure this out:

26 gallons for lets say $3.29 per gallon - equals to about $85.54... yikes!! That's even shocking to me!  :o

Last week it was $2.69 regular, $2.89 for Hi-Test.

Yesterday gas was $3.19 for regular, $3.39 Hi-Test.

Today it was $3.49 for regular, $3.69 Hi-test, the station closest to my house.

Of course, that was 2 hours ago that I checked the price. When I get dinner in a few minutes it'll probably be higher.

Can anyone explain to me how losing 7-11% of our supply/capacity from Katrina has caused a 30%+ increase in gas prices?

And is gas really close to $6.00 a gallon in Georgia?

Not anymore, the Governor put a price gouging statute into place.

Subject: Re: Anybody want to talk about Gas Prices?

Written By: Skippy on 09/02/05 at 10:40 pm

Not anymore, the Governor put a price gouging statute into place.

We've had an anti-gouging law since 1992, where the price of gas isn't supposed to be raised over $0.25 per gallon in a 24 hour period. It isn't working too well. The state said they are "monitoring" the situation, which is currently in a deficit condition financially. Although the higher the price gets, the more they make on gas taxes...hmmm, go figure. Illinois is considering a temporary abatement on gas tax for this same reason.

On another subject, I keep hearing that crude oil supply isn't the problem, but rather the rise in gas prices is because the refineries can't process the petroleum quick enough to meet demand. Now then, how come it's price of crude oil futures that goes up if we have a glut on that end? Is this a legal loophole that the speculators on the commodities market use to justify raising the end products? Would this activity be allowed on the floor of the NYSC, or would the SEC intervene at some point? Will speed racer stop before he gets to the bridge that Trixie warned him was out? Ooops, sorry, mind wandering.

I heard that the supply pipeline to the mid-west is now coming back online. Who thinks prices will start to fall soon east of the Mississippi?

Any input, pro or con, on this?

Subject: Re: Anybody want to talk about Gas Prices?

Written By: MaxwellSmart on 09/03/05 at 7:44 pm

Our governor, Mitt Romney (R) literally laughed when the legislature proposed suspending the state gas tax.  Typical Republican.  Deadset against taxes that affect rich people, but scoffs at a little tax relief for the rest of us.

What scares me is the psychological leverage the oil companies will use here.  After 3.50 or 4.00 bucks a gallon, $2.50 will seem like a sweetheart of a deal, even though $2.50 would have gotten everybodies blood boiling just a few years ago.
I love these industry shills that get on the tube and say, "Oh, government price controls never work, that's a sure way to kill the supply."  Yep, you have no recourse Mr. and Mrs. American Consumer, you just have to let the oil barons rape your bank account, because the free market is always right!

In Central New Jersey at the gas station I go to it was 3.19 for regular and 3.31 for plus yesterday. I got it filled up with Unleaded plus. 38.00 to fill up the tank. I drive an Acura CL and its a 2dr coupe. I wanted to go to the Jersey Shore again in a couple weeks for the last time this year. I think I will postpone that trip now.  Imagine what it cost to fill up a big truck like a GMC Yukon! On a side note General Motors said last months sales for their big SUVs like the Yukon, Chevy Tahoe(Ithink)and Hummer H2 were down 30% in comparing August 2005 sales with August 2004 sales of those 3 SUV'S. Ford also said Explorer and Expedition sales were down 40% from a year ago.

It looks like Rita is losing strength and tacking away from the Houston area and more toward Port Arthur and Lake Charles.
It's premature to say, but if Houston gets spared, the oil companies will have pocketed a tidy profit from all those Houstonians clogging the highways on the lam from Rita, and then the TX refineries DON'T get damaged, but what the h*ll, they raise prices ANYWAY!

There is a station here at 2.19 and there are 2 stations within a half mile of that one that have a
comparable price.  One is a Hess and there is a Hess station 1 mile from that on the highway
charging 2.46.  They all get there gas from the same gas storage facility 3 miles away, so there
isn't any reason for the price gap except maybe ....greed

Gasoline may dip below $2.00/gallon for a while, but the post-Katrina prices will be back...and then some.  Mark my words!  In 2015 Americans will be be stomping and cursing, "Oh why, oh why did we laugh at Jimmy Carter?  Why did we snub our noses at little three cylander cars?  Why did we pooh-pooh public transportation for eighty years?  Why did we spread ourselves so thinly in suburban subdivisions with no stores and no sidewalks....?"

$2.39 last time I looked.

This really isn't that bad.

When I was in France last year Gas Prices were around $6.50-$7.00 per gallon (the equivilant).

Wages are higher here in the United States, Taxes are lower and general consumer durables are far cheaper as well.
It staggers me that we all seem to have such a problem buying gasoline.

The problem is not that it's expensive, it's that the prices are being gouged.

If the Government were taxing the Gas to these kind of prices I would be able to say, Ok, that's fine, however, with Exxon declaring profits larger than any corporation IN HISTORY it's fairly obvious where the money is going.

You're lucky. In Perth, WA it's a bit harder if you don't have a car. For one, bus services stop at about 11:30pm (in some areas as late as 1am, in others as early as 9:30pm!), trains aren't much better. Getting from one side of the city to the other (Save the circle route or along major corridor) involves catching numerous (3-4-5) buses and waiting potentially hours. Though at least it is improving (we're getting out first underground rail station late this year, can't wait). So for many things I'm forced to use a car.

Well to give you an example-

My older cousin moved out of his home from which he'd been living 15 years, its a woodframe house from the 50s or 60s in an older neighborhood with similar houses- and its not too big, perhaps 1100 square feet, and 2 bedrooms, and the landlord jacked the rent from 650 a month to 800 dollars a month.

800 seems steep for a 2 bedroom 1 bath house in an older neighborhood like that.

I unlike the rest of us Yanks have a basic concept of what fuel costs elsewhere.

The thing that annoys me is that the extra charge isn't in Taxes (which I'd be fine with) it's all for profit to the oil companys.

Like I said, I understand what fuel costs elsewhere, having paid the obnoxious prices  ;D

The point I was making is this..

You's guys pay about $8 a gallon, but a lot of that Tax goes toward the NHS, it may not be great, but it's free. We pay a few thousand bucks a year for our health care.

We pay $2.50-3.00 a gallon (some idiots of course have enormous vehicles and pay $100 to fill up) but most of that is just going to the oil company.

Of course, I'm sure in England, France etc.. 50% is taxes, but the rest goes to the oil company as well.

Yeah it certainly is a high % of tax here, hey  I never knew that you had to pay that much pa for your healthcare  :o

I would not get a VW New Beetle because they just seem very impractical.  Not very much cargo space and it just looks crampy to drive in.

I drive a VW Jetta and it gets me 24 city/31 highway.  I drive it a certain way though (standard shift allows me to sorta optimize, I guess) and can usually average 29-30 mpg no matter where I'm driving.

Actually the German cars aren't as bad as you think ;)

Overall my Jetta is pretty nice.  It has airbags up the wazoo (driver, passenger, side curtain), LATCH system for my baby's seat, spacious trunk, lots of passenger space.  It also runs very cleanly, doesn't make a lot of noise unless I downshift from 5th to 4th by accident because I forgot I don't have a 6th gear.  I only have to change the oil once every 10000 miles, and the coolant system runs indefinitely because they employ a special perpetual coolant.  The diesel version of the Jetta gets approximately 55 mpg, and runs surprisingly cleanly as well.

i don't mean to be a pessimist, but we're all doomed.

it's peak oil, it's staring us all right in the face. every once in a while if you read an article about it to, say, the 19th paragraph, they say the reason for the high prices is that demand is outstripping supply, even though production/extraction is pretty much full on. all the kooks have been predicting this since 9/11 and i find it disconcerting that they're turning out to be right.

From what I understand, some of the problem lies with the additive they put into the gasoline to help it burn cleaner.  They were using something called MTBE and are now phasing that out and switching to ethanol.  But.......there aren't a lot of ethanol refineries up and running right now, so the prices are up until the refineries being built are producing ethanol.

Yes, I have been.  And as I recently stated in another thread, people here in the US have absolutely no idea how spoiled and pampered they are.

I lived for over a year in Japan.  And when you converted from yen and litres to dollars and gallons, I had to pay around $3 a gallon for gasoline.

And that was in 1990!  Traditionally, gasoline in Japan costs twice what it does in the US.

And in most of the world, it is the same thing.  In fact, we have the lowest prices of any country that imports it's oil.  The only way to find cheaper gas prices is to go to a country like Venezuela or Iran, which is an exporter of petroliem.

Of course, there is a simple solution.  There is enough oil in the US and Canada to make both nations net exporters.  But the same people that frequently scream the loudest at oil prices are also the ones who scream loudest and first when it comes to drilling for that oil.  They are also the ones that scream when a new refinery is needed.

Some people are simply spoiled, and want to have temper tantrums whenever somebody proposes a solution.  They have no interest in fixing something, they are having to much fun having their tantrums.

If you think gas is to expensive, buy a motorcycle.  It uses less gas and oil, and uses less raw materials to manufacture.  If you drive a 12 MPG SUV, I got absolutely no pitty for you when gas reaches a new record high.  You did it to yourself.

This topic comes up every time that the price of oil (and gasoline) rises.  And to me, this simply shows how ignorant the US people are ov how "Supply & Demand" economics works.

Oil is a comodity.  The price is not set by Texaco, Mobile, or Chevron.  It is set by OPEC.  Just like De Beers sets the world price for diamonds.  If there is a large supply, the price drops.  If there is a small supply, the price rises.  And when you have a smaller local company that makes an identical product (like the Kelsey Lake diamond mine, the only one in the US), they of course sell the item at the going international rate.  What do you suppose they do, sell it at less then the international rate?

The only way to break out of this cycle is to go from being a net-importer of the comodity in question to being a net-exporter.  The US holds this position in reguards to most food items.  We have probably the largest variety of cheap food in the world.  Rice, chicken, wheat, potatoes, beef, fish, corn, the list goes on and on and on.  It is cheap for us to buy because we produce a surplus.  The same things cost far more in other countries that either import it, or place price controls on the item.

Currently, gasoline in Venezuela is 12 cents a gallon.  Gas in Iran is 50 cents a gallon.  Gas in Saudi Arabia is 35 cents a gallon.  But all of these nations are major exporters.  They can almost give it away, because of the huge amount of money they make selling it to you and me.

Myself, I say we open up the drilling in the US.  And I am going to be even more radical: keep charging the same amount now that we do for import oil.

And that 100% of the excess profit be turned around and invested in alternative sources.  Bio-diesel, fuel cell technology, gasahaul, and other forms of renewable energy that can be used with existing vehicle technology.  I bet that we could do that for 10 years, then cut back our oil use to petrochemical use only.  The only "conventional" fues that would be needed are for things like aircraft and heavy machinery.

One big reason why gas is so expensive is that the US demand for gas the last 10 years has almost doubled.  And I blame all those people who have gone out and bought Hummers, and Ford Expeditions, and every other gas guzzling - emissions belshing SUV.  I hate the things, and wish they would put some form of "Gross abuse of natural resources tax" on the damned things.

I filled my tank yesterday with premium, and it only cost me $12.  Of course, my day-to-day vehicle is a motorcycle.  The 8 cylinder Dodge Intrepid sits in the driveway unless I am going shopping, or there is bad weather.  Of course, it sat in the driveway a few months ago when gas was cheap.  I simply like to ride my motorcycle, and hate cars in general.

Ya all wanna see gas prices drop?  Junk all those beasts that do not get at least 25 mpg, and buy something more economical.  I really do not have any interest in listening to people who whine about the cost of gasoline, when they drive those wastefull beasts.  It is kinda like marrying the town prostitute, then complaining because she sleeps around.  Well DUH!

So true, so true.

Yeah, people will complain about paying $80 to fill up... of course, what they often neglect to mention is they're filling up a leviathan.

I love the excuse "Well I need room for the kids." What, you have 12 of them?

As a youngster, my mom would often take me and friends, often 3-4 of them to different places, she drove a decent sized car. A Puegot sedan. It got about 28 Miles to the gallon and could fit 5 people and sports equipment quite easily.

I pay about $35 to fill up and am perfectly happy with that. I don't drive hundreds of miles a week or anything but because of some of my day to day responsibilities I have to drive a fair amount.
Specifically over to Illinois and back about 3 days of the week which is about a 40 mile round trip.

Of course I'd 'rather' pay less, but it dosen't kill me to throw 30-40 bucks in there every week or so.

Agreed! I have no desire to ever own one. Why do people feel the need to drive big bulky @** vehicles? What ever happened to the traditional family-sized car??

Oh, you must mean those things that were known as "Station Wagons".  I seem to remember seeing them, about 30 years ago.

During the 1980's, they became "uncool".  This was when gas finally dropped after the end of the Carter Administration.  When gas was down to $0.75 a gallon, economy did not matter as much.  At the same time, the "Mini Van" became the thing to have if you were a status-seeking yuppie.  The good old Station Wagon was something your parents had, and of course that was no longer good enough.

During the 1990's, gas stayed fairly stable, and people were making more money.  So of course, the trend was to get something which got even less gas mileage.  After all, if your neighbor had a Mini Van, you had to have a Maxi Van.  Then your neighbor got one of the early SUVs with 2 wheel drive, you had to get an even bigger one with 4 wheel drive.  Who cares that it will never go off-road, you had to have one.

Then there came the Hummer.  Upset that guy cut you off?  No problem, scare the bejesus out of him with a monster so big you can run right over him.  And you can justify them, simply saying you are getting them to keep your kids safe.  Who cares that they are top heavy, and roll over more easily.  And who cares if you kill the mother and 2 kids in the Toyota that you broadsided, at least your kids are safe.

Myself, unless you run a business that requires the large cargo capacity or live in an area where 4 wheel drive is an advantage (Northern Idaho, Alaska) I see no reason to have the damned things.  I am the only person at work that drives anything even remotely "economical".  My boss, his 2 sons, and the other 3 employees all drive either huge V-8 trucks, or SUVs.  They even have a large 4 wheel drive truck to go and make pick-ups at the UPS office every morning.  They could just as easily use a standard Toyota longbed, but that does not look as cool.

And the same goes for heating oil.  Even though it is almost summer, people are going on about how this is going to affect people heating their homes in the winter.  Well guess what, I don't care.  They have had decades in which to change over to something more affordable and less poluting, like natural gas or propane.  But when oil is cheap, who cares about saving it?  Now that it is expensive again, people are starting to whine.

In 1980, a new home cost $75k.  Median income was $17.7k.  Milk was $2.16 a gallon, and gas was $1.55 a gallon.

Today, a new home costs $166k.  Median income is $44k.  Milk is $3.30 a gallon, and gas is $3.00 a gallon.  Seems to me that after adjustment for income, gas costs less then it did 26 years ago.  Milk is also cheaper, and houses cost to much.

so the admin is trying to lower gas prices by rescinding environmental standards on gasoline. this when half the days during summer around here are already code orange or code red days for toxic fumes.

you don't have to be a member of greenpeace to know that's colossally stupid.

That is the "National median" price.  It may be more expensive in your area, but it is cheaper in my area.  YOu can actually buy a new house (3 bedroom 1

If you hate Hummers and SUVs, don't come to Alpharetta, GA.  They're everywhere down here.  I've never seen so many off-roading vehicles in an area where there is no where to go off-roading.  It's obscene.

Ah..I see. National median price. Makes sense. And where is your area again?? Mine's in southern California.

I live in SE Alabama.

But I understand what you mean.  Until just over 3 years ago, I lived in LA.  And trust me, I do not miss the expense and BS at all.  I was tired of a 90 minute commute, $1,000 a month rent, and outrageous insurance rates.  I may make half as much as I did in LA, but I live twice as well.

Speaking of the behemoths-on-wheels, I was listening to our local idiotic radio personality, Howie Carr, the other day. He and his idiotic call-ins were boasting about how THEY'RE not going to downsize their vehicles. What I heard in their voices was embarrassment and hubris. Of course they're going to downsize if cheap gas doesn't come back. Howie isn't 'coz he's loaded and he's a total pig of a man, but all those loudmouths who made fun of those of us who drive small cars are now getting their comeuppance.

Basically, in the 1980s and 1990s, we had our last hurrah with cheap oil. The industry made a big push to exploit our last big reserves in areas such as the North Sea. Now it's over and it's not coming back! If you see an SUV in ten years, it'll be a novelty, like seeing a '59 Caddy with giant tailfins!
Now, I do believe the oil industry is price gouging, and they will continue to gouge unless the G-O-V-E-R-N-E-M-E-N-T stops them!  However, we still won't see $1.19 for premium again, no sir!
Oh, and Bush isn't going to do a dang thing on behalf of the consumer here. Fogget about it! Who's he tryin' to kid?

It's actually dropped .10 here in N.Illinois to 2.87 . I'm greatful that I don't have to spend much on gas for what I need. I used to spend about 10 a week but now it's around 12 dollars for a week. The only long distance I go is twice a week to a community college 23 miles doen the road, for a total of 92.

Petrol has hit an all-time high, which is also bringing up prices of everthing else (due to cost of petrol to trasport etc).  :-\\

We dropped back down to the $2.70's after flirting with the $3 mark for a couple weeks.

My commute is roughly an hour long; I ride the train. And I'm glad I do; with gasoline prices the way they are, it is not worth it to sit in heavy traffic. Not only that, with the train you can relax, study/read, do lots of things you can't do if you're stuck in traffic.

I started working from home again to avoid the  50 mile round trip commute to the office. Fortunately, I have a job that allows me to work off-location.The commute was quick, mostly interstate, but why burn the gas?

Yes, we've had a 40 cent decrease in the past week.

Well, since we are talking about gas prices...
Here's what we have to pay in Estonia.

I've converted the local gas prices to more common currencies, for YOUR convenience  ;)
GBP -> 0.65 per litre
EUR -> 0.96 per litre
USD -> 4.38 per gallon

(should be accurate)

$2.65 over the road, but it was at $3.10 for a long time.

People often fail to realise that although living in my state is exceptionally cheap, living in the city isn't. Everything is more expensive. Of course.. then I just drive over to Illinois and smile because nothing compares to those taxes  ;D

Living in Chicago with high gas prices was the worst.  Cook County taxes you twice on gas.  There's the regular federal gas tax, and then the county gas tax.

It's the same in most of Illinois.

I live just over the river from the city of Belleville. (Used to live down the road from it) and they do the same. Regular tax, and then a county tax.

It's usually 20-30 cents higher.

It's unbelievable. They're higher than ever in my area. :o In the 26 years (exactly, to the date) that I've been alive, I've NEVER seen $3.50 prices for gasoline in the States. :P

ARE THEY EVER GONNA COME BACK DOWN AGAIN??!

Geez, calm down, fellow Guest. I know you're probably angry about the high prices...but whining about it isn't gonna change them. I don't like it at all either, but at least I don't post in large font when I rant about them.

i answer to the enormous-fonted query, i personally think they'll fluctuate but they're pretty much gonna stay where they're at. a buck-twenty gas is gone forever.

have i mentioned how i don't want to seem like a pessimist but we're all doomed?
