I have seen homeless people enter stores in the city only to have the employees give them the bum's rush--literally!  Street homeless are persona non grata everywhere.  I can't say I blame business owners for chucking out the bums.  Stores are there to make money, they're not equipped to deal with people society has forsaken.



True.  When I worked at 7-11 we were told not to let anyone use the restrooms...also if people weren't buying anything they had to leave.  Paying customers see homeless in the store and they won't go in.  Not good for business.

As others have pointed out, shelters are not exactly ideal.  AND, especially in most big cities, they are not allowed in stores unless they are buying something.  Heck, in alot of places in Chicago, they won't even allow patrons to use the facilities unless it's a small child.  My son and I stopped at a Dunkin Donuts near Midway Airport the other night when taking my brother to the airport and the worker wouldn't allow ME into the restroom, but when my son said he had to go, he let us use it.  And, this was AFTER we had already purchased stuff.  I guess they could always use a public fountain ::)
I hear ya it's just that here they can walk into any Wal-Mart or King Soopers and have access to a restroom....heck...the library lets them in they can use THAT restroom to wash up. I've seen some actually that cared enough to do just that.

No but I can assure you if that ever happened they'd get a boot up thier *ss. I actually witnessed somebody downtown who threw an apple core on the sidewalk and a smoker cussed them out for littering! He then proceeded to finish off his cancer stick and flicked the butt against the building ::) At least Apple cores are biodegradable

It sometimes depends on the neighborhood, Mark.  My dad works at 7-11 and at his store the public is not allowed to use the restroom.  They have found needles and other paraphanelia in there after some have gone in.

When I went to London, I was amused by the sheer number of public toilets everywhere.  I suppose some of them might be pretty nasty, but at least it keeps any public space where one can conceal oneself from reeking , like in New York or Boston.

But the worst ones have to be the karzis on the suburban trains (assuming you can find one that hasn't been vandalised!)...only the seriously desparate are known to use these...

Four college guys rent the house next to mine and pull all-nighters every so often. They get drunk, yell and howl, and play their stereo, where all I can hear are the booming bass speakers - sounds like a jack-hammer from midnight till about 4AM. Someone with obviously too much time on their hands, drove up the road and shot a paintball gun at my house and some others on the road.  >:(  There wasn't any damage, but it was a pain in the butt cleaning all that crap off!

So where do you place this one? There was this "homeless" woman that I saw who was holding a sign that said something like, "Please help my children. We are poor and homeless." The best part? She had a frickin' freshly done French MANICURE!

Oh yeah....she was also wearing a bunch of gold jewelery that didn't exactly look fake. :P

Okay, First of all they DO have a place to shower.where I live there is a place set up for them.....and if they don't want to use that place they could always wash up at a 7-11, Wal-Mart or other restroom....If I were ever homeless I would make Darn sure that I soaped up my stinky shirt and sponged off my pits.....NO excuse for stench :P

The latest commercial for Commcercial Federal Bank....it's a radio commercial and it talks of somebody finding a purse full of credit cards and cash....they return it to the bank and the bank tracks down the owner. It makes her Christmas as she thought all her money was stolen. Here's my problem....they go on to say how the guy at the bank is a hero for finding the woman and that is the great service you get from thier bank....no further mention of the person that returned the purse???? AND what was a purse full of credit cards and money doing in a dumpster anyway :-\\ ???

Well, at least old London town had the good civic intentions.  In cities like New York and Boston, developers just pretend people don't have those biological necessities.  Of course, no matter what city you go to, the drunks and the junkies and the psychos are going to pee hither and thither instead of where they're supposed to!

They got rid of almost all the phone boxes (or booths, as we call them) in America because they weren't handicapped accessible.  The phones just stood out in the open air, and drunks peed on them all the same!

You mean Fleet here in New England?  I got so fed up with them, I dumped them for a local savings bank.  The savings bank's services are more limited, but at least I don't have to put up with Fleet's nasty fees and the rest of their crap!

We had this idea of handing out pictures to anyone who stares. Maybe we should do that. Right now, we just resort to the old "Take a picture, it lasts longer" thing! :P

Well, adults just stare at us. It's kids who actually say something!! Mostly little kids to their parents. And their parents don't say a word! I remember one day Rush and I were in a strip mall waiting for a ride home and some little girl says to her dad, "She's so tiny!!!" He said nothing (that I could hear anyway). :o :o :oIt's too bad nice bras aren't found in the kids or preteen dept.In the 80s it used to be pretty easy to find bras in size 30 or 32.But now,it seems the smallest size is 34---the increase in obesity in America's kids has apparently articficially skewed the average sizes of underwear.I do live in California-but -I guess the stores don't think Asian women wear bras!And I'm not flat-chested either--I'm a B,so the typical kids styles don't work for me.They look rather sumo-like!!! :PCheers!

Well, some things are easier said than done.

As a short man, I encounter society's prejudice against short men all the time.  The media just LOVE reporting studies showing how short men get less respect, don't do well with women, don't make as much money, don't get promotions, have a higher suicide rate, have a higher heart disease rate, and so on and son.  The attitude from smiley beautiful people is, "gee whiz, men, I guess you better not be short!"  Height didn't matter so much to me until it became clear how much it mattered to our vain, appearance-obsessed society.
You've got all these women who just won't even consider dating a guy under 5'10," no matter what their height is.  Even if the guy is relatively attractive, like me, being "short" is a no-no.  The problem with height is that it's an immutable charactaristic.  There is a term heightism, which means discrimination against short people. 
Then there's what they call "short man's disease."
I was in a chat group about height prejudice, but it was just bitter short men kvetching about all the ways in which they had been slighted.  They picked up on every possible insult to short people in the media and wrote angry letters to the offending parties.  These guys liked to brag about how they bested taller guys in bar fights.  I found the whole thing insufferable.  I took one of the to task for saying, "short guys are expected to go out with fat women."
I said told he should show more compassion.  Fat women face similar prejudices to short men.  I got barraged with angry retorts about how "it's their fault they're fat, they just eat eat eat," and  "yeah, that's what they want us to do as short men, take the leftovers."  I could go on at length about these @ssholes, but the point is, they were the ones with "short man's disease," if anybody. 
In a way, I can't blame them.  If you don't have a chip on your shoulder as a short man, the macho culture will put one there for you.  It's just something you have to deal with.  However, bitterness and rage get you nowhere no matter what challenges you face, so I try to follow a path of wisdom...sometimes I stray

OMG! You do not know how badly that used to p*ss me off! I used to get told stuff like that all the time. "You have such a pretty face, if you'd just lose weight...." "You know, you could stop eating at any time..." etc. You can't just stop eating at any time. Mrrrrrrr. I struggled with my weight for years and years. I'd diet, lose a bit of weight, and then gain it all back and then some. At my heaviest, I was 20 pounds shy of 400 pounds. I loathed myself, but my mouth would rebel against my better judgment and I'd eat more and more. Finally, I just snapped and decided that I didn't want to look like that anymore. It took me a year and a half, but I dropped 200 pounds. I'm still not as light as I want to be (and I can't diet right now for obvious reasons ;D), but I'm happy with myself.

This isn't true for all people though. Some do have medical conditions that bar them from losing weight. There is also the very real disease of overeating (which I sort of had). It's right up there with bulimia and anorexia. That's why it irks the hell out of me when people say stuff like that. You don't know the person, so why are you making such stupid statements? The only time I get really annoyed with larger people is when they piss and moan about their weight and yet they're putting away fast food like it's going out of style. Don't expect compassion from me if you're going to stuff a Big Mac down your throat while crying about your weight. ::)

Just for the record, I never did eat much fast food. It was always big portions of homecooked meals. :-\\

My point exactly.  My disability, depression, has a behavior component to it.  Same thing with obesity. Sometimes with depression, you want to shut the shades and sleep all day.  It's the most tempting, but most destructive course of action.  Similarly, downing Big Macs and ice cream sundaes is most tempting for obese people, but most destructive.  When I see people with behavioral problems hurting themselves, I know how hard it is to fight.  Sometimes you win the battle of will, sometimes you lose.  Too many people hang onto the myth "stop eating so much" as the simple solution to obesity.  That's about as useless as saying "snap out of it" to a depressed person.
There's also a myth that SHAME works.  If you make people feel bad enough about their behavior, they'll change.  Shame--that is "toxic shame," as John Bradshaw called it--causes incalculable destruction.  Yet, so many people, mostly right-wingers, go on about how there's not ENOUGH shame!

On the flip side of that, I was always "super skinny" growing up (5'6" and maybe 85 lbs in 4th grade) and people were always telling me "you need to eat...you're too skinny" like I was anorexic or something.  When I explained to them that I DID eat, they looked at me like I was a liar or something.  ::)

Gaahh!  I know!  I'm 15 and I've weighed exactly 122 pounds for I don't know how long.  The last couple of years at least.  I'm one of those people that can eat and eat and eat and eat and never gain weight, and I'm sick of people saying "You need to put some meat on those bones!" ::) et cetera.  Most people wouldn't dare to guess how much I eat, but it's a lot.

You know what, though, you can't really blame the kids.  They don't understand that you don't have to say EVERY thought that comes into your head.  I've had my kids make comments about people before and I explain to them that a)it's not nice, they wouldn't want someone talking about them & b) WHY the person they commented on is "different" (if I can discern).  I once had a lady go off on me when my (then 3 y.o.) son asked me why the lady was so short (she was a dwarf).  I was in the middle of explaining to him that she was born that way when she came over and started yelling at me for having a rude child.  I then explained to her that he had never seen someone like her and was curious, like ANY 3 y.o. would be.  She said a few "choice words" and walked off.  He then asked  me "Mommy, do all short people use bad words?"  and I replied "No honey, only the rude ones" ;)


Who said I blamed them? I don't blame the kids. They don't know any better. However, the parents should teach their kids to first of all, not stare at people. That is more rude than making comments to a kid's statements. Second, the parents should teach their kids to be more tolerant of people who are different than they are before they are confronted with a situation like that!

By the way, I would never have a go at a kid's mum or dad for their behaviour. I understand that kids are kids, and if they're really young they may not understand what they're seeing. Hopefully the parent(s) will explain that not everyone looks the same as they do and to never judge a book by its cover. However, if they want to raise their kids to be intolerant jerks, that's their business, too. Just as long as they don't offend me and make me angry. "You won't like me when I'm angry!"

The other thing that bugs me is that the town makes it clear there's no skateboarding on the sidewalks, but whenever the punk kids are out there flouting the law, the cops are parked up their cruiser, drinking coffee.

Heehee.  Funny story...my SIL's have "codes" for cops...they call them "donuts".  They explained why they call them Donuts to my middle son.  Last weekend, we were going to a Dunkin' Donuts and he sees a cop in the parking lot next to it and says "Gee, wonder if that policeman is in the Dunkin' Donuts?"  When hubby asked why?, he said "Well, you know Dad, cops eat a lot of donuts" ;D
At an apartment complex I used to live at, I was talking with a security guard and he was being constantly interupted by his partner on the walkie-talkie....he was at the Dunkin Donuts wanting to know what kind the other guy wanted ;D :D

Drivers who think everybody in the street wants to listen to the same music as they do.  Especially at 2.00 a.m. when they're stopped at a red light outside my house.  >:(

God knows how loud it is in the car because often I can identify the words and my house is at least 30 feet away and we have secondary glazing to cut down on the traffic noise.

I hear you!   I live in a city with tons of apartment buildings all around and there always seems to be some homeless person blasting some boom box with awful songs at 3 am. He/she doesn't have a job but there's millions of others he's keeping awake.  Unfortunatlely, I live in the front of the street instead of the back of the building.

Are you sure he/she is homeless, or just hanging out?  A lot of those annoying homeless people are mentally iss, or otherwise disabled, no one would hire them no matter how hard they tried.  Heck, if you don't have an address and a phone number, you can't even submit a job application, not on the free market.

The cops around here say that the noise laws don't cover the hours between 7am-10pm....after that you can file a complaint. Check with your local cops and see what they have to say, blackdog ;)

Eh, Medi-Cal took too long sending my card, so when I called up the obstetrician I was supposed to see in June, they said that they weren't taking anyone else who was due in January. :P Now I have to spend my time trying to find another doc who does take Medi-Cal. And believe me, they aren't too nice once you tell them you have Medi-Cal as insurance. ::)

4. Anyone willing to commit a hate crime
5. Badly-Behaved Children, such as those who swear, use violence, taunt others or listen to their intolerant, racist parents.
6. Corrupt officials
7. Critics. I don't mind people who do it for a living, but regular people who won't shut up about their opinion on how you're failing at everything
8. Arrogant people
9. Con Artists. Brilliant as they are, I do not respect their work
10. Those who lack senses of humor. There are a lot, especially on this site.
11. Spiteful ones
12. Anyone bent on genocide
13. People who are depressed without reason, and write bad poetry to seem "sad"
14. Annoyingly optomistic people. I don't have a problem with you looking on the bright side, but stop desperately seeking one in EVERYTHING! God how I hate them. I loathe them. Them and their song "The Remedy". I hate that song. A lot.
15. Pseudo-intellectuals. Anyone who pretends to be intelligent by doing things that seem intelligent.
16.Conformists. This is right up there with Optomists.
17. People who won't shut up about how great the 80s were and how bad the 90s and 00s are. I wouldn't care, but some of them NEVER shut up about it.
18. People who use WTF and HTF instead of swearing like they mean it. I denounced swearing, but I feel that you should either use it or not. No trying to get away with using the first letter in a web acronym, or putting an asterisk on 1 letter.
19. People on messageboards that go, "Hey ;D I ;D happen  ;D to  ;D like..." After you give an opinion on something.


There are more in that category, but I don't have the time or space to list them all.


Things:

1. Trendy music. Who decides which songs are cool? We need to shoot that person in the face.
2. Constantly changing and upgrading technology. Just when you get something cool, it's obsolete, and everyone hates you if you don't get the new thing.
3. Web logs with no substance. Instead, they're crammed with online quiz results and bad poetry.
4. Message boards with people who do nothing but shoot down the opinions of others. See my signature for a similar thing I hate. It's made me become a hermit. I'm a fine hermit, if I do say so myself.
5. McDonalds commericials. They all seem to encourage the hatred of less-attractive people and view them as second-class citizens, denied bus seats to anyone more physically "attractive" or anyone who happens to have McDonalds food. I also hate whoever's deciding what's attractive in people. It's probably the media, so...
6. The Media. I hate them and their unrealistic perceptions on beauty.

Hey...I'm big...and once in a while I go to Burger King and get a Whopper Jr regular(notice NOT supersized)value meal. I am a food addict,and I have to really plan out what I eat to keep myself away from certain foods. I think a tendency for addictive disorders is in my family-my mom was a MAJOR alcoholic who tried to get 'on the wagon' several times...she died at 63,kinda young nowadays to die....and my biological father was an alcoholic and compulsive gambler. I have a hard time talking about painful things in my life,so I tend to stuff myself-and the pain-with food. I go to a therapist to help me work on my problems and the pain from my past...

???You must not have any food sensitivities if you can "stuff" yourself.I like to indulge in things like diet cola,frozen yogurt,middle eastern yogurt drinks,chocolate,and Indian buffets.But I have a sensitivity to foods containing corn products,egg whites,pork,lots of fat,lots of sugar,apples,OLestra, and some preservatives,so I have to limit the amounts of these foods I eat.A regular soda usually has enough corn syrup to give me a headache.If I ate so much I was ready to barf, :Pthat would limit my craving for more food the next time."Pigging out' on stuff likeRomaine lettuce and those mini carrots is good,since there's not enough stuff in them to make you queasy afterwards.But i guess spending time using the computer is a diversion.Cheers!

I have lactose intolerance,so I buy Lactaid milk. That's the only food intolerance I have. But I have intolerances to sulfa drugs and the antibiotic drug CIPRO.....

I produce a weekly radio program, and I'm telling you, there's no better time than now for the kinds of contemporary music I like.  I just saw some of the best composers and performers at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MassMoCA), on the 3rd annual Bang On A Can Marathon.
Mind you, this kind of music is an aquired taste but the genres of minimalism and avant garde chamber music are vibrant and fecund...
