Oh yes!

Yeah, I kind of figured that would be a few people who would want me to (mostly of the male persuasion).

Yeah, I can't believe in two weeks we'll be closer to 2010 than to 2001, hehe.

Anyway, I'm still totally up for it. Although the closer it is, the more likely (if it's in Vegas, it's at least a 50/50 shot. I can't promise for New York or anything like that, however).

Timewise, probably mid 06 at the absolute earliest.

I am slightly richer than my younger self (the one who posted here before), though. :)

I'm down with Vegas, altho i've never ever been there before.

I think Vegas is the best choice... not because of distance, but just because it's the most suited for a big group.. that way people can go off and do their own thing, but we're all still in the same place.

that's true...if we met in NY...then it would be easier for our Canadians friends to join us! :)

True...it would also mean that the West-Coasters (including me) would have a longer distance to travel...which some of us may or may not object to. The furthest east I've ever traveled was to Chicago.

Most (but not all) of the people I really want to meet are toward the East Coast... and I am in California.  But most (if not all) of them voted for Vegas.  I don't necessarily think people would go to the closest one... they'd more likely go to the one with the people they talk to most.

that's a good point, Cat.  I would love to go to Vegas, as I have never been there or anywhere even near there...but financially I don't know if I could swing it...that, and it's hard to find a babysitter w/o planning ahead..and Chris and I are already taking a vacation in 2006...we are going to Hilton Head, SC to visit relatives for a little over a week in June....so to be able to get more time in 2006 for another trip...it's iffy....now if it was in NY....that might be a different story.

^ I know this board (the regulars I mean) tend to populate a bit more on the East Coast. In fact the only three Californians I know for sure are Jeff (nally), Ultraviolet and Odyssey. All of whom I think it'd be cool to meet, btw. :)

As for Vegas, I pretty much agreed 'cause it seems like the popular choice and would be a little more central than, say New York. But I kinda agree, it's not really my thing either.

Even though I think I'm pretty cool with everyone and like to hang out and all, I honestly have to admit I'm not much of a drinker/partyer/gambler-type. Not to mention I've never used a slot machine in my life, so I'm not sure what I could do on my own in Vegas.

Anyway, point being, I'm kinda reverting back to my initial idea that various, smaller get-togethers at different places in the country (and even the world) would be the way to go. Maybe a few smaller ones, then one "big" event -- with alot of time for everyone to plan, say around 2008-10??

P.S. I'm totally up for anything in the Bay Area (but then again, it wouldn't be fair to make the New Yorkers come 3000 miles, lol). ;)

Yep. Sounds like a good idea about the small get-togethers. Hopefully we'll all still be around the boards three years from now so that we can do this.

About drinking/partying/gambling, I don't do much (if any) of that stuff either. I've never even been inside a casino, either....except for the Chumash casino in Santa Ynez, which is over 100 miles west of L.A. I went in there with my family just to look around and see what was there.

It sucks.

There is One.. I repeat.. One good band playing.

It's become 'Pop Metal Fest'

Ozzy is only doing a few of the gigs and I've already seen him half a dozen times.

Black Label Society are just.. incredibly awesome, but they'll do their own tour after Ozzfest. Strapping Young Lad, not bad at all, but not really worth sitting through the rest of the bilge for.

Wow, I don't think I'm even gonna bother going.

in a sense. but we also argue constantly. it's weird, i can't explain it. if i ever meet him, i'm going to challenge him to an arm wrestling contest. i think i'll win. but i also am convinced that in a more general throwdown he could flatten me in a new york heartbeat, so beyond that i don't want no trouble. :-\\

plus, i'm like way uber left, and he's like way uber right. and it totally doesn't matter! it's quite groovy. in that 70s soft rock kinda way.

It will be totally impossible for all of us to be all in one place at the same time (and who would be manning the board at that time?  :-\\) No matter where we decide to have it, there will be people who can't make it. My suggestion is to have a bunch of mini-meetings-1 in England/Europe, 1 on the west coast, 1 on the east coast and 1 down under (but not limited to just these-we could have more). I don't think we should make them all at the same time because there may be a few people who will be able to make it to more than one.

That is my suggestion.

We can have one of the west coast, one on the east coast, one in the UK, one down under, etc. etc. There may be a few people who can possibly make it to more than one so my suggestion is to have them at different times. Or we could have an annual one and each year have it in a different place. It would be totally impossible for all of us to get together all at the same time in the same place. I think my idea is a good compromise.

In May 1992 we went up to San Jose and drove to Monterey; this was during the Memorial Day Weekend.

In June 1994 we took a two-week vacation to the Midwest, flying to and from Chicago.

In May 2002 (during Memorial Day week), we traveled to Minneapolis; my dad had to be there for a work-related convention, so we went with him. :)

Those sound pretty good! That's cool you got to fly when you were still pretty young. I first flew when I was 21 years old. I've only flown three times, myself ...

May 2003 - Oakland to Washington, D.C. Then drove through Virgina and into Northa Carolina.

May 2004 - San Francisco - transfer to Dallas - then to Fayetteville, AR.

May 2005 - Oakland to Las Vegas.

I just noticed I have flown in May every time. How strange!!  :o

Whew, that was SO close to that time. It probably makes ya wonder sometimes... When I first flew (and I flew by myself for the 1st time), the SARS thing was going on - so that had me a little worried. I almost brought a face mask for protection  ;D

I was in near hysterics on the way to the airport.  I was hyperventilating, I was sick to my stomach, my legs were shaking......the whole train ride there I kept thinking "we're all going to die and leave my dad alone...who's going to take care of our cat?"

I will never go through that again unless it's absolutely, positively, undeniably necessary.

Wow! I'm the total opposite, I love to fly.

Far as I can remember I think I've flown about 16 times.. maybe more, not sure.

I know I have enough air miles for free flights with 3 different airlines. (I'm saving them on AA to go to Russia and UA to go back to Buenos Aries.)

Oh, I also flew on September 11th 2002.  ;D

I've always had my worries, but for some reason once the jets start going and we start to go - it feels like an amusement park ride and I actually get quite a thrill out of it.

I was passed out in my seat the whole way down here.  I took two Valiums and knocked myself out.  I remember putting my seat belt on and I remember my mom telling me we landed.  Same thing on the trip back home.

I guess I didn't take the liberty of sleeping or taking a pill like valium to calm my nerves because I was going alone the first two times I flew and I wasn't going to be with anyone I knew to wake me up. I needed to guard my stuff and myself. I have never fallen asleep on any of my flights.

But, taking a valium sure would be nice on a long flight!  ;D

If I hadn't taken the Valium, I would have had a stroke.

Gotcha beat  ;)

I flew on December the 1st when I was just over 4 months old, having been born on July the 27th.

I wonder if a baby that young would even be allowed on a plane now?

That flight was from London to Chicago. On the way back it was Chicago - Amsterdam - London.

I, too do not fly well. The more and more I fly, the more and more I hate it. Unfortunately, my husband's sister and dad live in Puerto Rico and that is only way to get there.  :\'( :\'(  I find listening to music helps. One trip, George Harrison really helped me. I also find that a couple of drinks help, too.  ;) (Not to mention holding Carlos' hand-which I do). I do swallow my fear but I tried to avoid flying if I can. I also flew in April of 2001-before all the b.s. you have to go through now. Unfortunately, that trip I had to go alone and Carlos wasn't there to hold my hand.  :\'(  This year, we have decided not to go to PR so no flying this year (thank goodness).

I probably fly somewhere once or twice a year on average.  Love it.  There's a greater probability of me dying in an auto wreck than a plane crash.

I've met Asian and Nerdy, Jess and Mama K.  There's a few more I wouldn't mind meeting; some western location would be kinda cool.  8)

Another board I visit occasionally has had meets in a few different places, not always the same people.

Not at all. On the last leg of our trip, we went down highway 1 to San Luis Obispo, stayed the night, and drove home via Highway 101. :) My family and I are "ocean" people; that's why we like to drive on whatever highways go near it. 101 is probably more scenic than I-5 overall.

I think this would be a heckuvan undertaking, but if we could pull it off, why not make a weekend of it?

For those who live in the California/Nevada area, I live 1 1/2 hrs. or so north of Sacramento.
I don't see how it would be that difficult to establish a weekend convention, if you will.

However, I DO see a few details to be worked on:

-Confirmation of who the members are, and how to assure no "extra" intruders get in
-What sort of facility this would require
-Foods to serve, activities planned, etc.
-How the weekend arrangements would be handled...

With proper planning, I don't see how this wouldn't work!
(Unless it was from lack of proper interest.)

Ok, I have said this before, I will say it again. Why not have MORE THAN ONE?? We can have one of the west coast, one on the east coast, one in the UK, one down under, etc. etc. There may be a few people who can possibly make it to more than one so my suggestion is to have them at different times. Or we could have an annual one and each year have it in a different place. It would be totally impossible for all of us to get together all at the same time in the same place. I think my idea is a good compromise.

I've always kinda favored this idea, too. It'd be easier (financially and timewise) for me to get to, say Las Vegas or LA than to New York.

I've been on a plane tons of times - my parents and I commonly took vacations in my first 7 years (either to Florida, where most of the extended family lives, or Hawaii). So I'm used to it, but I can see how it would be frightening to some people. Especially if they'd never done it before.

I now feel that way about any roller coaster that goes upside down (;D), but when I was 4, I could've cared less. When you're older, you do realize there's things to worry about. Not that they will go wrong -- they probably won't -- but it's just you know there's the potential that they could.

When I was little, I felt similarly about upside down roller coasters. I still don't like 'em...and I still have no desire to ever ride on one. Last year when I took a physics course, I found out why they can stay upside down; it has to do with centrifugal force (if the coaster is going too slow around the loop, it could fall off the track). Still, the thought of going upside down frightens me. :o :o

I typed a longish reply earlier but the site crapped out on me and I couldn't post it.  Hope that doesn't happen this time.

To those of you who have said that you are too frightened to fly you might consider doing what I did.  I went on a 'Flying With Confidence' course at my local airport.  I wouldn't say that I love flying now but I certainly don't mind it.  I had my nerve tested on holiday this year when we flew in a 19 seater.  Hubby had told me it would be about a 50 seater not this tiny little thing.

On the course, which I did about 7 years ago, we had talks from a pilot, a doctor and a flight safety inspector.  They gave various presentations about flying aircraft safety and what have you.  Then we had a chance to meet separately with them if we wanted to.  We also did some breathing exercises and the like to calm people down.  In the afternoon we did a short flight.  The pilot sat with us and talked through everything that was happening, all the noises and wing flap movements etc.  The doctor was on board and lots of flight attendants, about 1 to every 3 passengers, to hold hands and talk you through everything.  We got a chance to look around the flight deck as well.  There was a video to take away afterwards.

No matter what your problem is I think a course like this would be able to help.

Ok. We seem to have two different meetings that people say they want to see happen-one in California and one in NY. Now, we just need dates-and my advice that they not be too close to each other because there may be a few people who might be able to attend both. Also, if we can someone who is close to those areas check out facilities, how much it would cost, etc, etc. that would be great. Another idea, I know NYC is VERY expensive. Why not someplace close to NYC-either in NJ, or L.I. or Westchester County. I think expensives may be cheaper in those places.

Well, I'm up for it and my suggestions are NY, Chicago, (I like your atlantic city idea) and maybe DC. Those are all decent locations in terms of the maximum number of people.
I have no idea about the west coast so i have no input there.

I'd say at least a few months in to '07. Maybe April - May - June time. That's not usually a particularly busy time for work or travel so it's not like there would be any peak rates involved.

Financially i don't think it would be too large a burden, figure one night.. maybe 2.. food, travel costs, maybe not quite as cheap as a trip to the beach but not any more than a weekend away.

I was thinking next summer-kids will be out of school, vacation time, etc. I think it may be easier for people to get away during the summer months.  But, like I said, I am willing to do a little of the leg work with the help of someone else.

A few pages ago, someone suggested giving it at least two years so that we could do all that. ;) '07 seems a little too soon for me.

Summer sounds good.. and I don't mind having a look around but I wont know my situation 100% for a couple months yet.  :)

Summer is fine with me too; that's when I know I have time off.

I don't see this as a one-time deal. I see it as the first. If all goes well, I think we could do this on a regular basis. If you can't make it one, you may be able to make it to another.

I never thought of that. How about once every year?

I think that's a good way of looking at it.

Some of us have become good friends over a long while and will want to see each other regardless, it makes sense to add a few others to the equation.
I can think of several people I'm keen to meet.. and of course my partner Mike will attend.

That's what I was thinking-or once every 2 years.

I'd still love to meet all you guys/gals who I've posted with over the past 2 1/2 years.

I think if we can pull together something for summer of '07 and if it goes ok, people will be more inclined to work on having another one. And this could settle the dispute of WHERE to have it. One time we could have it in one place and another in a different place.

Yeah...sorta like a convention. :)

That is what I was thinking of. But I don't want to do anything if people are not interested. Like I said before, I don't want to plan a party where no one comes (been there, done that.  :\'( ). If people are interested in something for next summer, I think plans need to be made NOW. First we need to know WHERE and WHEN. I think we need at least 5-10 people who are willing to be there for us to start making plans. If we plan early, we can get discounts-and yes, I am well aware that $$ is the concern of a lot of people. That is why we need to get someplace that is not going to break people (that is why I think NYC would not be a good place-because it is too d@mn expensive-sorry to the people who live in NYC). My question is:

WHO IS ON BOARD??

They help you get onto the plane and sit there.  You could then get off again if you can't cope.  I think one of the guys on my course did that.

For the next couple of flights afterwards I took something the doc gave me but it left me light-headed so I stopped.

It's alright.....I'll stick to travel that doesn't put me in a confined space 30,000 feet in the air.

As I've said, I'm on board.. and I'm sure I could persuade Kay and Mike to come along. (They view me as their leader)
